A couple of months ago our Transit MH suffered engine failure.
I used a local company, who rebuilt the engine, and thankfully it seems to be a good job so far.
The name of the company is Just Engines ran by Daniel Laffan in Stradbally, co. Laois. The contact number is 086 3363952 or email justengines@live.com.
They seem to work on all types of small commercial diesel engines.

Good to know Malcolm,

Engines seem to be on a cycle, In my younger days we were constantly doing Engines in Diesel Land rovers and Opel Rekords, these vehicles would probably go through Two or Three engines in their lifetime, then things improved and vehicles went to the Breakers Yard with perfect engines and now we are back rebuilding Engines again. God be good to the days that you could fit a bale of hay at both sides of a Morris Minor Engine and close the bonnet, now you wouldn't fit a match box under the bonnet. Backwards we are going with modern technology and the amount of time involved removing parts to fit simple things that could be done in a few minutes in the past.

Pat, the reason why there was so much space around the engine in a Moggi was that Alec Issigonis the designer had planned to put the engine transverse but the top brass thought it was a step too far, later they relented and the Mini was born. On reflection if the Moggi would have had the transverse engine ,front wheel drive and a flat floor ,no transmission tunnel I think British Leyland would have been streets ahead of the rest.

My dad had Minors for years. The first one had a split front windscreen. I remember on 2 different Minors the front wheel ralling off as he did a slow turn. Something about not greasing a joint

when I started my apprenticeship we were in one of them going back to work after lunch on day, when the was a loud crack , we reckoned the front wheel went faster when it left us behind, then it ever did when attached to the Minor .

The car I lived was the Triumph Herald ,lift the bonnet and everything was there in front of you and you sit on the wheel to do all the service work.

Don,t you just love when things go off on a tangent. :D

I had a soft spot for Triumphs, never had a sprint but had a 1972 Triumph 2000 mkII straight 6 engine and overdrive Gearbox, wish I had it now.

Going back to Pat's point of engines going in cycles, and from talking to Daniel, he believes that because the auto industry went into liquidation near 10 years ago,the engines developed were not tested properly before been released onto the market place. The upside for him, is that he can knock a living out of this. He is rebuilding 3 transit engines a week. All of the ambulances that hse purchased in 2010/11 with imf money, the engines have been through his hands since .
The downside for me as a customer it the reliability of the same engine. But as my mammy said when I was a kid " there's no point of crying over spilt milk".

thats another passion of mine the humble minor, i have a 1966 2 door saloon it only comes out in the good weather! the storey i heard about the transverse engine was that at the time of development the morris car company and the austin car company merged and to save on costs the decided to use surpluse austin a-series engines instead of a new transverse one much to the frustation of issigonis.

The other thing John was the front bumper on the earlier models had a little plate where the starting handle went in, was a result of them changing their mind and making the body a few inches wider. But they already ordered and taken delivery of thousands of bumpers so Issigonis had them halved and then made the little cover plate to hide the cut.

Thank you Mr Eirebus for your point of order, you are right of course , I will have have to keep my digressions in check, not easy for an old codger like me and would it not make the topics all regimental like other clubs and we would lose " The Craic".
