I see there are Snipe Domes now as well as the original. The domes seem cheaper... any less benefits with a dome Snipe?

I like the look of the dome better.

Here is why I went for the snipe

Snipe 515 x 192 x 355 up or 180 down mm
Dome 649 x 787 x 300 mm

Have plenty of room so space isn't an issue for us. I never considered satellite before but I am looking at it now. Finding it hard to justify the cost though.

why not try the portable systems which are around £60 or so before committing to a fully fitted system. Price wise the snipe in either form is hard to beat, but you will need a decoder box to go with it

I have a portable one which came with a FTA box. I don't use it for a reason, it's a PITA.

And you think a sat dome is going to be better because??

Ask yourself how much tv do you watch and is it necessary for the peace and tranquillity of wedded bliss for her indoors to be able to see corrie

Because it doesn't require running any leads to it, doesn't require setting up and finding a signal and because I can leave it on the roof without having to put it away and also use it on Aire's, car parks etc

Space on the roof was an issue when we bought the last van and that is why I changed from a camps some to the snipe.
It isn't so much of an issue now as we have changed the van but keeping the snipe for now.

We started with a tripod mounted dish but it can't be see on Aires or other non campsite locations.

I should have mentioned in my last post that the 355mm is the working height. It is only 180mm in the down position.

Following this with interest. Having just returned from France, instead of reading books, I spent my time studying everyone else's motorhomes, with the result, I now have garage envy & Heather has satalite dish envy.
As roof space might be a problem for us, the Snipe could be a good option.
Is the Snipe a satelite receiver that you connect to a sky box for example or a freeview recorder box?
Can you still pick up UK programmes when on the continent?
Is it auto search or manual?
Any help appreciated

Welcome home. Hope all went well with trip.

The snipe is just the dish. It is self seeking.
You will still need the receiver(Box) or a tv with a sat receiver built in.

It will work to about 45 degrees which is a parallel with Bordeaux.
You can be lucky and get some of the Astra 28 channels further south but generally you will need a larger dish for that.
You can of course select other satellites and pick up channels from other European countries.

You are very welcome to check our out next time we catch up.

Thanks for that info Mark.
France was great thanks & used a couple of your recommendations as you will see on other posts which I will add to in time.
We have a little tv with built in freeview , not sure if that's the same thing as sat receiver.
Appreciate the offer of checking yours out. Will you be at Omagh blue grass?

I was curious when we were way out east. If I retuned from, my Astra 22? Satellite to try seeking out a european one, would it be a nuisance to revert back. And, has anyone tried any of the other options?

Most sat control units have several options. Just select a different one than astra

Bullet bit!
Snipe 2 purchased at the NEC show. With Avtex TV.
Fingers crossed.
Have to compliment the supplier. Ordered at the show on Thursday & it arrived on Friday.
Only downer they quoted £50 extra for the MH mounting plate, but when it all arrived, the mounting plate was listed in the book as part of the kit.
Is this a ploy to screw a bit more money on the deal?

As far as you am aware the snipe pro kit has the plate and the standard one doesn't but I am not sure how the snipe2 comes.
The plate is usually £99 so it is possible he wanted the extra for the pro.

Mad money for a plate with 7 holes drilled & 6 studs.
Set it up today, (temporarily).
Needed 2 12v outlets. Only had one & couldn't find my double adaptor.
Parked my little van alongside, used it's 12v socket & set the Snipe on the roof of the little van.
Tuned in to Astra 2. Gave me 369 channels, about 20 that worked & half of those foreign. No BBC, ITV etc.
Played around with it for a couple of hours,
Now have 687 channels. Most of them X 6 or 8, but at least I have the usual & ones I can watch. TV is great.
Think I might have a good buy.
You might be safe after all Mark :-)
All I have to do now is find somewhere dry or take it to France for some dry weather to fit it to the roof 8-)

With the avtex TV it is possible to move the channels into order and delete the rest. It takes a while.

I could maybe do that the next weekend we get out.
Is yours mounted central on the roof Mark, to one side, or does it matter?

Currently it is mounted central but to the rear. Out last van it was central but towards the f ont. you need to make sure nothing obstructs it like footlights when they are open. You also need to make sure it doesn't cast a shadow onto the solar panel of where it might be in the future.
