Door hinge seized

 ·
Posted: 08.01.2016  ·  #1
We have four hinges on our habitation door. The door started to get very stiff and I noticed it was one hinge that was seizing, with the help of some Craic'ers at Tollymore we managed to disable that one hinge and the door now opens and closes lovely. But it needs to be fixed at some stage.

It seems to be a nylon insert in the hinge and no amount of oiling will free it, I can't even move it by hand. We have it in the closed position so it doesn't stop us using the door, but has anyone idea's on freeing it up or have came across this before?

Hi ally,

I don't have an easy cure for the problem, but have had this issue on sailing dinghies where the rudder pintles (pins) fits into the gudgeons (holes) on the transom (back of the boat) which had nylon bushes inserted.

Whilst I have never seen it widely acknowledged or written about, I am convinced that nylon can 'swell' or distort causing the type of friction you have encountered. We simply replaced the nylon bush as the hole was generally too large for us to enlarge by drilling.

I am nearly sure I have come across this in other applications but can't bring it to mind.

Had the same problem with the gas locker in the Knaus, but was able to fix it by removing it, taking it apart and oiling it. The Knaus Hinge is similar to a cab door on an old tractor, you just slide it apart. I did try oiling it with spray oil when it was in position but it was a waste of time.

The nylon ends may only be inserts and not the actual hinge pin

Try some silicone spray, works on almost anything and very slippery.

Having rear doors on my Ducato had a similar problem
This worked for me and is a fairly easy fix and ongoing resolve feature should you need it.

OK
First buy, steal or whatever some grease nipples.
Drill and tap the solid part of the hinge so that you can screw in the nipple,. force in multiuse grease and leave it a while. Remove the nipple and replace with flat top plastic plug.
Repeat on rest of the hinges as a precaution

Put the grease nipples somewhere safe for future use (as you can guess I didn't and dammed if I can find them to do a mates van)

It is a completely different type of hinge.

Having done a bit of reading on this it sounds like the nylon bush has bonded to the spindle and no amount of lube will sort it, it needs to come off to try and repair but best option is to replace it completely, and the rest could follow the same fate as the seized on.

This one looks like the one but if I remember correctly they are bonded onto the frame and door. No sign of screws.
Could be tricky to remove.

The problem is only one half on one hinge is seized.

That does look like the hinge in Mark's post although not sure it's exactly the same, I ain't had a chance to do anything with it yet but will post when I do.

Door started seizing on the rest of the hinges at Scarva, finally got it fixed, Ron, a craic'er, took to it and found out that the plastic was indeed just a cap, the end had been removed only. Once we got the cap off we put some three in one oil into the barrel and hey presto all good ! :)
Need to try and get the rest of the first bit if the cap out to I can put the fourth hinge back on.

Now I need to replace the catch that holds the door open, door moves that freely now the wind blows it closed :D

If Big chief swinging doors was to add some acetone/brake fluid mixture to said hinges,he would
be swinging free for a long time.
not withstanding the foregoing your normal habits will eventually return to normal.
and in case any of that does not work,a bit of oil does no harm.

Filled them full of oil, 20w50, because that is what I had :)

Will oil them regularly.

Ally you could try heating it with hair drier or heat gun to slacken it off ,best in a vice then you can work it with vice grips and a bit of penetrating oil

Hi Guys, I have a problem with the hinges on the garage door. They are all fairly stiff. I removed the door and pulled out the plastic ends from the hinges and filled with penetrating oil. They are still very stiff. I will leave over night to see if it makes any difference.

Any advice appreciated

Dave

Same hinges as mine, they are rubbish. But yes, taking the ends out and oiling regularly works. I still never got that fourth hinge moved on the habitation door.

Dave did you notice on the right side you appear to have a seal between the screwed part and the diverted part,on the left it is nor there this may be where your problem is. See if you can spread the left one away a small bit and then attack with WD.
Hold something firm against the right hand one, like a lump hammer head, then tap the left side to see if you can create a gap, lube and get all the parts moving on the hinge pin.

Thanks Ally. I tried to get the bolt out by hitting it upwards with a hammer and nail but it didn’t work. I was fairly easy on it as I’m heading to Scotland on Saturday and didn’t want to break it.

It would be interesting to see what material the hinge pins are made of, as some materials such as nylon and Tufnell react badly with some types of lubricant. The pin is thought to swell slightly or deform rendering further lubrication pointless.
I can’t remember the exact examples that I have read about, perhaps some of our members will have more knowledge, or a google search should provide information.
Hopefully yours is simply metal on metal that will respond to tlc and oil. Good luck and enjoy the trip.

Same as mine, as above, I have four door hinges, one is seized solid, it's been like that since 2016.

I haven't even attempted taking it of for the same reason. Thankfully I can get away without it.

One of my locker doors started going the same way, I oiled it quickly and moved it up and down for ages to free it up. I check them regularly now.

Basically they are rubbish design, like most things in motorhomes.

Mine are starting to go on one side, same setup.

Has anybody identified a replacement hinge if one were to drill the rivets out?
