Clutch Pedal Sticking

 ·
Posted: 14.11.2016  ·  #1
Hi

The clutch Pedal in our Ducato 130 Multijet is sticking to the floor. I can easily pop it out with my toe but makes hill starts etc pretty scary. After a few hours driving the clutch behaves normally but once I leave it parked for a few days the problem reappears.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Is it hydraulic or cable? Siobhan.
Might be a return spring off or missing on the pedal

Thanks Pat

It's hydraulic. I had a good look around and cant see any springs disconnected. When its working its perfect - just seems to seize up after being parked for a few days

Start with the easy solutions. Get some WD40 (or better) up around all the joints and hinges above the clutch pedal. You should be able to see the spring that is supposed to lift the pedal back up. This could be sticking.

Thanks All

Yep tried WD40 all around the springs and linkages - no improvement.

Guess I'm heading to the garage....

Appreciate all the responses..

Fiats have a strange clutch. The release bearing "pulls" against the pressure plate, rather than pushing.
The sleeve can stick on the bearing.....

Was hoping to see some discussion on this problem. I have had a similar problem for the last 3 years on a 2004 Boxer 2.2 TDi.
Not 100% certain how to fix it yet but certain that the cause is heat related.
It only occurs in cold weather, when I have the heater on high and blowing full into the footwell.
As soon as the pedal starts to squeak, I turn the heater down and, after a few minutes, the squealing/sticking stops.
If I ignore it, the pedal will sit on the floor and not return until I let the area cool down.
Have got into the habit of pulling the pedal up with my toe whilst driving, just in case.
I have a big trip coming up so I may put the motorhome in to have the clutch pedal, pedal spring, maybe slave cylinder replaced.
Be good to know if anyone else has tried this..

I'm wondering if your clutch pedal pivots on a bolt or a pin assembly. If there is a bolt, slacken the nut a tiny bit backwards. Metal expands with heat, therefore the sticking is happening.
For a pin assembly, the pedal mechanism will have to be taken apart and cleaned, reassembled with copper grease to the moving parts.

Sounds like it could be the master cylinder, its closer than the slave to the heat source.
Have you priced one?

Ref two responses above.
There is a lot of plastic used in the pedal box assembly. I believe that the issue relates to differential expansion of elements within the assembly. Looking at replacement pedal images on google images seems to reinforce that opinion. It is a plastic moulding.
I think that the pedal material grows slightly when hot. Obviously this material expansion will reduce the internal diameter of the pedal at the pivot interface, causing the squeaking and eventual lockup.
Need to be careful with greasing without knowing the specific pedal material. Some polymers will swell, some will shrink, some will be stable when in contact with oil based lubes. Don’t know what material Peugeot are using.
I am considering replacing the pedal, cylinder, return spring on the basis that the vehicle has been in production long enough for a corrective design tweak in this area. The new springs will have a little more oomph in them as well, which will help.

Not priced up fully but, compared to cost of motorhome it should be fine.

Good info in your post.
Regarding the lubrication of different materials, copper grease is pretty inearth with most materials.
The more that I think about it, a replacement pedal assembly, cylinder etc is probably the safest bet, especially since the parts are easily available at a breakers.
