Fuel Consumption

Hello,

I am in the process of buying a motorhome and possibly an RV. I was wondering if anyone can give me an indication of fuel consumption for RV's.

The one I am looking at has an engine size of 7.5l and weight of 5500kg's

Not much. Is it a conversion to LPG? Thats the most sensible approach imho.

The ad states: "petrol engine also running on gas lpg" I am a bit clueless how it can run on both.
Perhaps they just meant it was converted to LPG.

To be honest, you need to think of more than the mpg. The driving license, resale value, parking, cost to visit sites etc. So much more hassle than having a 7 meter and 3-4 ton vehicle. But thats how I see it, if you want something this size take everything into account. I'd love to have an RV but its not practical. Hope you find what you're looking for.

Petrol and gas would be LPG.
I think you'll be in single digits to the gallon maybe 10/14 depending on the size of the RV.
There are RV used in Ireland but if you're buying a big RV you might find your options on where to travel and stay a bit restricted.
But loads of space in the RV being the compromise.

Usually starts on petrol and changes automatically to lpg when warmed up. Some claim twice as many miles per gallon of petrol as lpg was once half the price of petrol. My mechanic thinks that they don't actually do the same distance on lpg and petrol per equal measure ie not as efficient on gas. He said the ratio could be around less than 1.5 when comparing to petrol. Other factors include loading towing terrain and speed
I would expect 8 - 10 on petrol and 12 - 14 on lpg

Hi Paul I heard it was the other way round you'll get more miles to the gallon using petrol but it's much more expensive so if you do get less mpg with LPG it'll still be cheaper based on the cost of petrol vs LPG.
I may have got this totally wrong!

Thank you all for the feedback. There is definitely a lot more things I need to consider before I buy an RV.
All the fuel consumption example mentioned, what units are you using, gallons, litres, miles or kilometres?
I really need to get an idea of fuel consumption before I can take things like manoeuvrability, size restrictions on travelling etc in account.

Much appreciated on the feedback.

In terms of fuel consumption as LPG has a lower energy per litre than petrol you will get less MPG with LPG. This reduction will be of the order of 15 to 20% so a vehicle giving 10mpg on petrol will give about 8mpg to 8.5 mpg on LPG.

The saving in running costs comes from the price savings of LPG v Petrol.

I meant what you're saying Jamie too. lol.
I would expect 8 - 10 on petrol and 12 - 14 on lpg. MPG
This expectation would be per gallon based on the price of a gallon of petrol, therefore you could buy approx 1.5 gallon of lpg for the same price.

Thank you, you guys are great. I very much appreciate your feedback. I am reconsidering the type of motor-home I want at the moment. Might go shopping this weekend.

Lpg fine on motorway at constant speed. If you are on small twisty roads its not as efficient as petrol. You can switch over to petrol anyway and just use gas for cruising.Gas is creeping up in price .although I have stripped petrol and gas converted engines.Gas engine is spotless no carbon build up.Oil nice and clean as well. You can also buy hho kits for diesel and petrol engines.Works best on Diesel engines gives you another 4 or 5 to gallon with latest design in them. You need the adjuster to fit diagnostic connector so you can adjust down the amount of diesel from brain to injectors to suit hydrogen gas from hho unit.Sounds complicated but once you understand the principle it's fairly simple.Kits contain wiring and relays if you have any mechanical /electrical experience its a simple job.Have a look at Celtictigerhho website.
