Always a popular debate at craic meets lately as some have bought and some are considering, so just for fun :-)

Thought about getting a Safari Room for a quite a while but they are quite bulky/heavy and inflexible compared to a driveaway awning. Would also be a bit wary of strong winds and I don't always keep a close eye on the forecast when away in the MH.

Looked at inflateable driveaway awnings for when we are pitched up for several days but they are quite expensive for what they are and not totally convinced about durability. In the end I went for a Royal Traveller Annex (from Donagheys) but have not had a chance or the weather to use it yet.

Will post a review when I get around to using it.

Times I would like the benefit of one, for example at the likes of vantastival, but as I wild camp mainly then it's a lot of money and weight for not a lot of use.

Ally I have been on safari and loved it. :D
But I take on board what everyone seems to be saying about them.
I would love to have one so i could keep out the boots etc from my MH especially at festivals.
But to be honest now that I think about it ...it is hard enough to get help to pack up to go home so good help me if I was trying to get it down at the end of a mad weekend.  o.O

I do not actually have a safari room, I have a Vango Kela drive away awning. When we downsized, we felt that when we take the grandkids we could use it for extra space. Brilliant bit of kit which can be put up in 15 mins or so. Other than kids being with us we wildcamp, as we live in Scotland so easy to do, so never even carry the Kela, just use wind out awning as required.

We would recommend driveaway awnings for greater flexibility and in some cases better prices.
We supply both but find people edging towards driveaway awnings recently.

When in Doonbeg last year this couple arrived in a VW T25 Camper and parked up beside us,the next thing I saw was a Gazebo being erected beside their van. I thought to myself, yes what a great idea, this then contained all kitchen gear plus chairs and table. As you would know Gazebo's come in various sizes and not that difficult to store, price £50-£80 approx.worth thinking about! O-)

That's what we have been using with the Compass, a Gazebo. Bought at Glastonbury 2007 for £50, can keep it up when it's windy, can drive away from it, stores easily.

Have never used one. That's because since we started motor homing there is only the two of us.

In the trade off between the benefits of the extra space of a safari room versus the mobility of not having the hassle of carrying / packing etc a fairly sizeable item - we always said no to the safari room.

I can see their benefits and can see why some people might decide to have one... depends on your camping style and priorities.

Unfortunately one of the campers turned up with a vango drive away awning. Amanda was really taken by the simplicity and extra space. I pointed out that we would have only been able to or wanted to use it about 3 times in our 3 month tour but to no avail. Looks like I'm About to to be £400 worse off.
So if anyone has also got some really neat essential to haves on their motor home can I recommend the campsites north, east or south of me. :D

Our van supposedly came with a safari room, but two years down the line, when we took it out it was only a front and one side. We'd unpacked and left it in the loft, so it could've been lost by us to be fair.

We've been mulling over seeing can we purchase the missing side for it, or going for the windblocker option, as there has been a couple of times it would've been handy (hence we eventually got it down from the loft). Once all the additional poles are put in, it really secures the wind out awning - it'd have to be pretty windy for me to panic about it to be honest, if I had the three sides and all the additional poles etc.

The in laws have a T5, and they have an inflatable drive-away awning. I'm really impressed with it, and I don't think it would be any less durable than a pole built one to be honest. The downside is potential punctures I guess, but the upside is that it would flex in the wind so no broken poles. It's very easy up, even with a manual pump. We manly stay onsites, so the idea of clearly marking the pitch, and leaving all the crap we've got out a bit more secure does appeal a bit too.

Just to add some alternatives...

I watched a lad put up one of these Coleman event shelters a few weeks ago. He did it mostly on his own and he had it set up in under 15 mins.

I walked passed a few hours later and he had quite a group of people gathered with deckchairs and beers...

A little spendy at over €200 but pretty cool looking.

Hi David,

We can source an Outwell San Diego Freeway Driveaway Awning for you.
Click here for more details. (video at bottom of the link)
It is a smartair one (aka inflatable).
Just be careful you may need the tall version for attachment height to the side of camper.

If you are interested then let me know and I'll try and do something on the price of it for you.

Regards
Michael

If that was aimed at me, then thanks, but I doubt you'd come down enough for us to justify the handful of times we'd actually use it, unfortunately! Especially with 2/3's of a safari room already.

However, is it possible to order just the missing end of a safari room, or are they kits only? If it is something that can be ordered, I'll measure up and drop you a line for a price!

Thanks

Hi David,

What is the make of the awning/safari room?
I'll check up if we have a relevant supplier and see what they say

Thanks - I'm pretty sure the awning and safari room are both Omnistor, but I'll confirm over the weekend, and get the size.

Although, I was having a nose on your site, and maybe the rain blocker might do the job? Probably only missing the beading for the figure of eight to link to the front panel, so that might be an alternative option...

We can also source the Coleman Event Shelters outlined earlier in this piece.
We would retail the 3m x 3m one at €178.00 or the 4.5m x 4.5m one at €234.00
If anyone is interested then feel free to let me know.
