Came across this site : Zappy's Blog

Interesting to read his guide and how cheaply & easily the tanks can be cleaned, ordered some tablets and they arrived today with an A4 guide on cleaning both Fresh and Grey water tanks.

Going to give it a go tomorrow.

I cleaned my fresh water tank with the truma kit as it seemed to have sand in it (actually calcium deposits) and it got rid of it. Used caustic soda in a very diluted form on e waste tank and although I don't know if it cleaned the tank or not it cleaned the stones on the driveway

Sterilised our tanks with chlorine, used to sterilise Milking machines available in any Farm supply shop. also used in swimming pool's.

Zappy and his tank cleaning products are highly regarded by the folks on motorhomefacts, not read a bad review of them.

His tutorials on various aspects of motorhoming are excellent, His photos of replacing a pump in the flush reservoir together with Simon's (LTS) helpful phone advice saved me a chunk of money and what would have been a very 'inconvenient' (intended pun) month in France.

I thought tanks were putting weather in and storing water until it was dumped. Full stop.

I have been using milton fluid for years ,I put it in the fresh water tank for an hour or so and then run the taps to fill the grey water tank ,both tanks are cleaned with the one fill, then I rinse it all out again with fresh water.

Fresh water tastes a lot better with no taste of chemical.

Grey water was getting a bit smelly, now no smells at all. So seems like great stuff and for a great price!

I Only used one for the fresh water, one tablet does 45 litres. My tank is small. Used two for the grey tank.

I've read that chlorine and Milton are not good for the stainless steel of the boiler. No experience with either. I use citric acid from pharmacy and the Truma kit.

I Doubt that is correct, chlorine is regularly used to sterilise Milking machines which are nearly all stainless steel! Also you don't need to run it through the boiler, just fill the tanks with water/chlorine and drain them later.

The way to avoid damaging anything is to use a mild solution and give it plenty of time to work,
Some folk rush and add way too much chlorine and then the fun begins,

Very important to read the instructions carefully,

Truma's manual for my model says "those containing chlorine are unsuitable." Up to you what you use.

He states on the instructions to keep the boiler full and to not activate the hot water taps, so none of the solution goes into the boiler. No need to disinfect the boiler, just heat it up to max to disinfect.

I'm going to wait until summer, put the heating on. Put the Milton solution in the tank, wait a couple of hours then flush the water system. Finally drain hot water tank and flush the whole lot out again. Sounds long winded, but what else would I be doing when she's at her ma's.

Just to emphasise what Ally is saying your boiler should be okay if you follow that instruction ...

I would have thought that the boiler would need done as the water only gets to either 40 or 60 deg and not boiling point. The Truma kit includes a descaler, which would build up especially in the boiler, from hard water.
