Ballinafad Castle, County Sligo.
Known locally as The Castle of the Curlews, the castle at Ballinafad controlled a key route on the Red Earl's Road that connected North Connacht and West Ulster through the Curlew Mountains. The Castle was built in 1592 during the Nine Years War by Captain John St Barbe.
It was attacked many times during its history, and was partially destroyed by Red Hugh O'Donnell in 1595. The castle is a very visible landmark for anyone travelling from Sligo to Boyle along the N4 road.

I am very interested in old castles dotted around the country. I try to visit any within walking distance of camper Parking. I tried recently to attach a picture from my camera roll but I did not succeed- afraid I am a bit limited when technology is called for. Still I like to see thee pictures, and a history resume is a good idea. Will trynow again!

Should say that's Dunmore castle in Doonbeg, co Clare. (Dunmore means 'big fort') There is also a smaller castle called Doonbeg about a mile from Dunmore castle. Dun beg means 'little fort'
Dunmore castle is actually in Dunbeg village. A history plaque states it was built in 16century by O'Briens of Thomond. Sometime 1598 it was surrendered by Tadhg Caoch McMahon to the Earl of
Thomond who promptly hanged the garrison in couples facing each other!
Doonbeg campsite is between the 2 castles.

Ps Chevy, no idea why the picture was not 'upright' !

Visited Parkes Castle on the shores of Lough Kee today. Along with Donegal Castle hardly worth the time. The history far outshines the exhibits.
