Gas fire - tip

This is maybe common knowledge but it wasn't to me.

When picking up our new van I put the gas fire on to test it, I put it on number 3 setting. The dealer told me never to do that. He said it must be put on full blast for 5 - 10 minutes to dry the condensation from the flue or else the condensation runs down the flue causing it to rust and then let's carbon monoxide enter the van.

Would this apply also where you may have not used the gas for a month or two or does it just apply to a new van being used for the first time only?

The Carbon Monoxide thing is very scary.....

Applies every time you light the fire from cold.

every time that I wash the van's roof, which I do with a hose and brush etc, I light the fire afterwards.

The white steam that comes from the chimney can be copious. almost like a new Pope had been elected ! Obviously some water gets into the flue.

During the winter we periodically take the van out for the day. During the outing we run the fridge, flush the toilet and generally check every useable appliance as I believe an item used regularly stays in better condition. This includes a blast of heat from the fire.

So I agree with Ally on the need to heat. We have a carbon monoxide alarm as well as a smoke alarm.

I think if you have no fire and just blow heating it doesn't apply. Always condensation in vans when its warmer in the van than out.

No, the cooker isn't vented through a flue. Which is why it should never be used for heat.

You may notice that the fridge start position is next to the heigh setting, for the same reason.
Most gas appliances start heigh in order to heat the thermocouple quick and you then turn them down to the required setting. If there is a pilot light you are required to hold in the starter position to open the valve for a flame for the same reason to heat the thermocouple.
