i have 2 german 5kg bottles that i used to get filled in dublin the garage had a special adaptor to allow the bottles to be filled the garage closed down (not blew up ) i was just wondering does anybody know where i might get one of these adaptors it would save me a load of cash not buying a gaslow etc

not a great idea but many are doing it.
The bottle must be empty before you fill it as there it can only be filled to a max of 80% and there is no acurate way of calculating how much you have left in it.

i have a calor adaptor and fill my own cylinder.
most important bit is only fill eighty percent as marked, to allow for ullage.
i fill fire extinguishers so i am used to filling but the eighty percent rule is paramount.
not even just a wee bit more for luck !!!!!!

have recently got a very good price from leisure tech to fit a forty litre tank and do away with the cylinders altogether.

bit more than i have now.
2 x 6kg bottles = 22 litres
40 litre tank less twenty percent = 32 litres

Nice one Bob.

That will give you loads of scope.

We have 2x 11 kg Gaslow bottles which allows us to carry about 42 litres when full.

We still have one full bottle and one almost empty and I cant remember the last time we filled up.
It was either before going to France in July or when we came home.

I will be filling on Friday Night on my way to Bushmills so it will be interesting to see how many litres it takes.

The only safe way to fill a gas bottle is to know the gross weigh of a correctly filled bottle and fill to that weight using a reliable scales.
Going by volume can be uncertain as there can be residues in a bottle which will result in overfilling (have you ever shaken an 'empty' bottle and felt/heard contents still inside)

Personally I fail to understand why people choose mess with such a volatile substance outside of an authorised environment just to save a few quid, is it not illegal in the first instance? .

i always make sure the cylinder is completly empty and yes i do weigh it.
the adapter i have also has an 80 per cent safety valve same as gaslow.
i shake the open cylinder several times over a few days and finally weigh before i fill.
21 quid to exchange or 8 quid to fill, 13 quid saving.

as with most things in life there are always idiots who are wreckless.

I have one of them huge Calor Gas tanks that feeds the house, apparently I can get an attachment for that, then get LPG car or MH

But it all sounds very scary, I don't trust Gas at the best of times.

i have just seen the price of autogas e 1.67 i thought it was supposed to be cheaper than petrol@
e 1.56 dont know what calor bottles work out at per litre

That's more than double the current price in most of Europe, where it is roughly half the price of petrol.

those uk prices are a huge difference e 1.67 in newbridge kildare yesterday i dont know who they sell it to at that price cheaper to use petrol in car
