I got an email from Irish ferries today offering 10% discount on sailings to France in 2014 if booked by December 18th

Yes. We got that too.

We have been using irish ferries for years, some time two or three times in the year. The Dublin sailing would save me the extra drive but one thing puzzles me. This is their description of the new Dublin - Cherbourg sailing. They describe it as "economy" however the price is the same as the Rosslare - Cherbourg sailing on equivalent dates.

Where is the economy?
Am I missing something?

Has any one looked at the Dublin route?

I get the impression that it only sails once each week from June to end of August.

Maybe I am reading this wrong.

I would think economy comes from the standard of services supplied on the boat, it's a freighter so not a lot of extras or space compared to the main Irish ferry boat. Celtic link have done an excellent job on theirs which looks similar to the IF Dublin one, and while not the QE2 is very clean comfortable has enough on board to make in my opinion a better alternative to IF

I just pointed the Dublin sailing out to my father who sails to France from Rosslare with IF.
He said as it the same price he would prefer to drive the extra journey to Rosslare and get the nicer ferry.

However, when I pointed out the April sailing times he changed his mind. The Dublin sailing gets into Cherbourg at 11:30 hrs compared with the Rosslare sailing which arrives at 14:00 hrs. They have a 400 mile drive from Cherbourg and the earlier arrival would mean getting to the house in the day time rather than evening.

So there you go. Horses for courses !

You do have a point there, with the days and arrival times varying across the year it does make a difference, we have arrived in Cherbourg around 5pm and you dont get many miles before you need to stop for the night, an earlier arrival helps. The thing to remember is that the cabin is only for sleeping in, its what the other facilities are like that makes for a comfortable crossing.

As we normally only get 2 or 3 weeks at a time in France arrival time is always a contributing factor.

I usually go for Irish Ferries as they usually arrive in Cherbourg at 11ish. Celtic Link have been about 3pm in past years which is a pain. I see this year their summer sailings arrive earlier (3pm i think)

Yes indeed, I"ve booked for 4 weeks in July/Aug., lucky me

, out on Sat and in on Sun suits us fine. The boat seems to be the same type as the Celtic, and Stena (Belfast-Birkenhead) boats and the " economy" in the title, I would say, refers to the fact that it"s not a "cruise" ferry, ie. not a miriad of restaurants/bars, duty freeshops, cabaret etc. Just 2 bars, 1 restaurant and small but, adequate cabins. As you sleep most of the voyage, I"m happy to pay less and have a lesser drive and less fuel this side of the water, you pays your money and takes your choice, eh ?

I have been looking at it with and without the 10% discount from either company.
As usual you need to be careful selecting your dates as prices do vary.

Here are prices I have looked at. It is actually cheaper for me to go for three weeks in July than two just by picking the dates right. These are before any discount...

Have always used IF......and have always been happy with the service......of course would like the prices of the bar and restaurants to be a little cheaper .......but know that I'm coming home with the van full of French cider......bordeux wine .....and beer. If someone has already mentioned it .....forgive.......what about the free trip to British that IF offer. As we have relatives in GB we find it very useful.......if only to get to a lovely site in south Wales for a few days.
I have heard nothing but praise for Celtic link and would consider them but for the free trip to GB when we book for France.

Well that shows that the Dublin route certainly isnt economy on price as its the most expensive. As far as I know the free trip is a time limited offer and they are offering 10% off at the moment and no free trip, that of course may change once this offer has expired.

Sorry Mark, should have checked, that was a typo on my part. Should have said that although IF are a bit dearer, (for us on our dates about 280 euro)I will save about 200 euro on fuel and about 4 hours drive. As I said in another post, I can"t fault Celtic at all, great boat, good staff/service, but the 2/3 hours to Dublin is better than the long 7+ hours to Rosslare, bear in mind we"re towing a car. If it were just me and the Mrs, it"d not be so bad, but with two teenage boys, "are we there yet, how much longer, I"m hungry, I need to pee, he"s hitting me" in your ear for the last 3 hours of the journey, gets a bit old ! !

We also had a bad experience getting LPG last year at our usual fill up on the way to Rosslare, and I can do Dublin easily on half a tank.
