Is anyone using satellite broadband either in the Motorhome or house?

I have just bought a new house and know the broadband is only 3mb. I have no idea what the contention rate is so speed could be slower at times.

Looking into satellite broadband and prices are better than I thought.

If anyone is using it could you give me any tips about what I need to look out for

We had it here in work for a couple of years before we got fibre and it worked well except for VOIP, it would not work. A freind has used it in his travels in his motorhome and again it worked well except that he couldnt watch sky at the same time! and he reached his download limit very quickly.

Who are you looking at to supply it as I have very poor download at home and would consider putting it into the house if it was reasonable enough.

Considered it a few times. I see no point in it these days. Pick a providor with a great 3g/4g signal in your area and use a MIFI or 3g/4g router with a contract sim. Got to be cheaper than satellite.

Where I live its in a hollow between hills and you are luck to get a 2G signal never mind 3/4G. When there is heavy rain I lose the sky tv signal. I am considering pigeons to send messages to people

My nephew has satellite in Boa Island for the farm as services are very poor there. It's ok but he would prefer if BT would put in the fibre down that way but it will be a long time before that happens.

Pigeons make a mess :)

Have you tried all providors?

<Soapbox mode on>

BT Fibre is partially a lie.

BT run fibre cabling to the green box, then use the old two pair copper wire from the green box to your house/premises. So not true fibre. The further you are away from the green box the slower you get and you cannot get their so called "infinity".

They have been given millions by government so that people in rural area's get faster speeds but it is these very people who still cannot get it, including myself.

The Moira exchange is being made fibre compatible or whatever it is they call it, but like you Ally being in the sticks means that we cant get anything above 1.5mb, no matter which provider.

We are looking at new premises and the industrial complex at Nutts Corner does not have nor has plans to be fibre enabled! We would have to take a leased line to the Belfast Exchange at Finaghy! at a cost of approx £15K per year...........I dont think so.

The millions have certainly not reached the Boa Island area. Stephen would love to have faster as he needs to use the internet a lot for his farming as he supplies M&S with beef cattle.

Satellite gets beamed from space if you get a bad picture with adverse weather then the dish needs re-aligned or as Dave says there is an obstruction. perhaps even a slightly bigger dish. The footprint is big enough to cover the area.

No idea who to use if at all.

SES seem to be popular and this company is part of their group http://www.broadbandeverywhere.co.uk

I did think of 3G mifi but I am not sure there is a 3G signal at all.

I need to wait until we get in and see what everyone else is using.

Mark, maybe I am old fashioned but I think at the end of the day old BT is as reliable as anyone. For that reason I've never changed from them and have been completely satisfied with them for the past 45 years.

What speeds are ye getting with the present provider?

I'm with a local company airwire.ie and I'm getting 2mg up and down for €30 a month,

I was with 3 for last few years but it took a dive and most evenings there was nothing at all and when I'd phone the call center I'd get a man in India that wanted to argue rather than try help,

But since I changed I'm happy enough with new crowd,

I haven't moved in yet so I have no personal experience of speed.

Postcode check indicates no fiber and a max speed of 3mb down. As I mentioned before it will depend on contention rate for wired connection speeds.

I did speak to a neighbour yesterday who said it wasn't that good.

Another problem we will have is all 3 floors in the house are concrete and wifi within the building is an issue. I can see me putting a business repeater system in too.

oh, the joys...... LOL

That is what the people I spoke to are using but don't rate them.

Need to get in and see what's what first.

My sister and her husband are farmers and live in a beautiful location - I wouldn't describe it as remote but it is deeper in the countryside - have satellite broadband. For them it was the ONLY option. Nothing else available. Mobile phone coverage is not great while in the house. They are living in ROI.

I didn't test it but talking to my sister I would say satellite is the last option you would want to use

Why?
It is more expensive than other forms internet service
The speed is at the low end of what is commonly understood to be "broadband"
The monthly data allowances are also at low end of what is commonly available

Having said that if your need is email, book the occasional flight, book the occasional hotel room, buy something on Amazon or Ebay, or some light to medium browsing satellite will do the job. :-)

Thanks drifter.

You are right about the cost but that seems to be going in the right direction.
Speeds must not be what is claimed then (good to know)
unlimited is now available but again at a price..
