Just thinking out loud

I was thinking of making up a very short extension lead with a frost stat in it to fit between my existing EHU lead and Motorhome to turn on our 700 watt oil filled radiator/heater that is plugged in inside the Motorhome during periods of Frost. I hope this makes sense!

Comments for or against would be appreciated.

Sounds a great idea but might be cheaper just to buy a heater with a frost stat already on it. I have one with a frost stat.

Plus if it is only to come on in the frost, would it be better to have a blow heater? that way it would be putting instant heat in the van for very short periods.

You are probably right Ally. I didn't know you could get a heater with a frost stat. You learn something new everyday especially on Motorhomecraic.

I bought a frost heater recently and it's somewhere in the garage and I'll have a look at it tomorrow if I can put my hand on it.

I just keep a moisture absorber in mine and go out and open her up

However have a couple of friends who swear by one of those tube heater as they are so cheap to
run and easy to fit in

I found this one on ebay if you don't know what I am on about, not saying this is the one to buy but it looks OK

Any electrical wholesaler would stock tubular heaters. They have been around for years and years. My last dog had one in his kennel. Power consumption is generally around 60watt per foot, so would be on constant for about 16 1/2 hours to use 1 kW per foot long. (approx. 20 pence)

Are they any good? we had a 450w oil heater in the van at the Kilkenny meet last January and we sent it back and bought a 700w, as the van was quite cold.

Personally, I would think they would be useless as a source of heat to be comfortable whilst staying in the van. They would probably be fine for preventing frost damage.
They are generally used as frost prevention in milking parlours, greenhouses, attics and boiler houses. At 60watt per foot they basically dissipate the heat of a 60watt light bulb over a greater surface area, 2ft = 2 * 60watt, 3ft = 3 * 60watt bulbs etc.

I had a 3 ft in my shed for years that I had to go out and switch on when in got really cold.
They don't warm up any large area but are great, as said, for small buildings like Dog Kennels, They do however usually give out enough heat to stop things freezing in most enclosed spaces like a Motorhome or Caravan

The only reason I showed the ones I did was because I hadden't seen tube heaters with stats on before

I bought a Warmlite 500W Frost Watcher recently for £12.99. It looks an interesting bit of mitt. I see the on eBay for £19.99. I don't know how to post the link.

I am still toying with the idea of fitting a stat, a 7 day timer and a 360 degree ultrasonic rat repellent tingy in a plastic electrical box placed under the van.

Although I bought this as I can't walk pass a bargain, I've been told that all you need to protect the water in a Motorhome is a 100 Watt bulb on from dusk until dawn.
