Hot leisure battery

 ·
Posted: 13.10.2013  ·  #1
Hi all, after a weekend on the electric hook up as I was disconnecting the mains I noticed that my leisure battery was quite hot. I only bought the motorhome new in May this year and I assume this should not happen. Would the fact that my main van battery had went flat before I left, (I had to get the RAC out & he got it started with jump leads ) have anything to do with it?

Warm possibly but not hot, I would get it tested as it may have a dead cell. It should be covered under the warranty of the vehicle if it needs to be changed. Did you leave anything switched on in the van to make the vehicle battery go flat.

The main battery shouldn't have gone flat in a new van , get it checked out, what makeof van do you have

It's a Swift Lifestyle 644 bought in Marquis motorhomes, the van wasn't used for about 2 months & nothing electrical was left on. I have checked the leisure battery this morning & it is dead.

Is there an inverter in the van and if so just check that it hasn't been left on as this will drain your battery as I found out.

I took it down to M & E Motorhomes yesterday, Michael is going to contact Swift & get the leisure battery replaced under warranty. I still don't know what discharged the main battery though.

It's not impossible or unusual for a battery to go faulty so quickly, but the warranty covers that.

Batteries are bought by motorhome manufacturers by the pallet load and will be sitting around for some time before being fitted and used so it's only natural for some to end up faulty quickly once in use by the end recipient.

Your right FC. I was at a factory visit to Autotrail and saw a pallet of leisure batteries sitting in the workshop floor.

If you leave lead acid batteries on a concrete floor for some reason they lose their charge very quickly, but set them on a piece of wood/pallet they don't
