Jordanstown campsite ‘best in Ireland’

The council-run Jordanstown Loughshore campsite has been hailed as the “best in Ireland” by a major camping organisation.

A member of the Irish Camping and Caravan Club visited the site last month and said he was immensely impressed with the facilities on offer.

The club has stated that the site is the “best in Ireland” and is so keen to return it has made a formal request to the council to rent it out for an entire weekend in December.

The club will be bringing 20 vehicles to the site as part of its weekend rally on December 6.

The council has said the dates requested are normally a particularly quiet time and the additional income generated would be welcomed.

Officers also feel allowing the club to use the facility would help publicise the campsite and bring in more new visitors.

Brendan Whyte from the club said the facility “ticked all the right boxes” for the December Rally.

He told the Times: “A good well-run facility, with power points and good access to the town or city centre is ideal for our needs.

“We usually organise a rally to Belfast for December for the markets and Christmas shopping.

“At that time of year it can be tough to get into a campsite that has power points that you need for electric - especially in the winter - and Jordanstown certainly ticks all the right boxes for our needs.”

Brendan (39) is from Armagh and has been touring Ireland and the world in his motorhome for more than 12 years.

He added: “The club is all Ireland and I represent the northern branch. We have rallies and meets all over and use a lot of different campsites and other facilities such as schools or sports clubs.

“One of our representatives visited the site in June and he was very impressed with the facilities and we are very glad to be able to use the site this December.”

The revamped Loughshore Park and campsite was unveiled in August 2011 after an investment of over £1.34million from Newtownabbey council and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

Since its opening the facility, billed as the gateway to the Causeway Coast, has increased its visitor numbers each year and welcomes people from right across the world.

The popular location, boasts modern amenities, a play area, cafe, a new bandstand, lots of car parking and easy access to the shoreline. An impressive array of public artwork decorates the area.

That script should be sent to Coleraine Borough Council.
