Hi all
scribing a trip to the allegedly the most scenic road in the world "Geiranger-Trollstigen"
  • Landbridge to harwick
    Over to the hook
    Copenhagen
    Sweden
Norway - Lillehammer (missed the olympics unfortunately for the downhill Carlsberg trials, probably), Geiranger

And then get our way back in a 1991 motorhome:-~) {new gearbox, timing belt etc ready to rock}

Any ideas / help / assistance {dont speak nordic by the way}????

Any one done this/similar route?

We went years ago but crossed Frederickshaven to Gothenburg then up to Oslo. Gothenburg is l lovely city and the Kon Tiki museum is worth a look in Oslo.

Quite a drive you are contemplating, how long do you intend to take

Thinking it will take about 4 weeks to do correctly, stop off at a few locations for a couple of days to let the family rest.
I love to drive, its a pleasure to rack up the miles looking out of the cab and then having a sherbet at a new location.

Thanks for the tips - im taking both dogs and want to spend as little time on a ferry as possible so i dont have to kennel them or leave in the van alone, although i havent found a method of hiding the Irish Setter in a backpack yet?? {all ideas welcome}

Midge's are worse than in Scotland I believe,

There are plenty of other utube too, but it's the size of their van and the places they can get to

Sweet mother of god Max!!!
How long were you there mate!
You have tramped every frosty, mouldy, peaty sodden section of Norway known to the Vikings and then some!!!
Moses parted the seas - but MAX did Norway 100%!

Yes - i am so interested in letting Hessy hit these roads in her golden years, part of her bucket list i heard when i got her.

I will go through your route and check the spots - as in my intro - i want to reach the 9 island roadway and then retreat - purely due to work and the family will be hitting cabin fever probably.

Not looking forward to the midges to be honest- if accurate - the irish setter wont appreciate wearing a head mask i think and i cannot allow them to eat at him - Galgorm was bad enough!

The views, space, night skies and the icy waters/fjords i am looking forward to an experience.

I think you would be made welcome in this country in a motorhome?

They are not the same listing, instead different trips where maybe some places have been seen twice.
For example, the 2013 trip had been clockwise with departure from Oslo up to North Cape, the 2018 one counterclockwise with entry into the country at Kirkenes (eastern Finnmark on the extreme north-east on the Barents Sea).
Å is on Moskenesoya Island, the southernmost of the Lofoten archipelago accessible by road.
It is very named and quite exclusive but I prefer the beautiful village of Nusfjord or even Henningsvaer on the same Island.

For descriptions and what to see, if you scroll through the list of useful sites, you can find a bit of everything.
I have the travel reports of every trip but obviously in Italian.

In total we spent two months in the Country, 15 days on the first trip, a little more than twenty on the second and as many on the third.

If by "nine Island roadway" you mean the more commonly called Atlantic Way, that is the one that goes from Kristiansund to Bud, don't get too excited.
Just a few kilometers and a bridge that seems twisted even if it isn't. Stuff for Japanese tourists on a bus.

Unlike Finland, Norway is not the ideal habitat for mosquitoes and midges.
I remember them only in the Inari area in Finland, in any case it is a phenomenon limited to the months of July and August and a little Autan Plus is enough.

You talk about icy waters/fjords, do you intend to go there in wintertime ?

I forgot a few mechanical precautions.
First of all the tyres, in the summer there is no problem but a snowfall can also happen in late May and from mid-September/early October. In summer M+S at least, in winter studdable mandatory.

Then the brakes.
There are many long descents also with steep slopes and even some in the shape of a corkscrew.
There are many of the first but I remember the one that from the top of Utvikfjellet falls down to Birkielo.
Of the second type is the one that leads from the Voringfossen waterfall to Eidfjord.
Six hundred meters in altitude in about five kilometres.
Second gear at 4,000 rpm and brakes a bit yes and a bit no to not overheat them.

Hi Max
absolutely you are on the button here mate- i am really enjoying the conversation and inside knowledge.
I intend to head over for july, so the tyres should be ok - probably get a new set for this trip.
the brakes i definitely will ensure are in tip top as the rears are shoes and the handbrake i have had to use b4 to slow her down in a very very steep road before.
It is the Atlantic way i refer to, however our own Atlantic way here is unsurpassed - Achill and the rest behind imo.
Im sure it is just a highway - seen the photos but just want to drive it.
I have 6 months of R&D to plot out - thanks -and keep the tips posting please!!!

I know your Wild Atlantic Way traveled last August from Kinsale to Malin Head.
Did the Causeway and Morne Coastal Routes too.
Wonderful.

To organize such a demanding trip in terms of cost and length, in addition to the period, you need some basic information:
- Time available.
- Latitude to which you want to go. In your case I understand you would get as far as Kristiansund (northern end of the Atlantic Road).
- Personal interests. Only nature or also history and architecture? Hiking and trekking or (like us) are you no longer old enough for demanding walks?
In one case cities like Oslo, Kristiansand and especially Bergen are worth a visit.
In the other places not to be missed are the Prekeistolen (4+4h excursion) and Trolltunga (maybe a dozen hours round trip).

I would always refer to one of the two Scenic Routes sites:
https://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/routes/
https://www.visitnorway.com/pl…ic-routes/
Both list them from North to South.

They are all passable without difficulty even by medium-large motorohmes. With some exceptions.
The Gamle Strynefjellsvegen (I think it means Old Stryn mountain road) which if nothing has changed includes about twenty kilometers of dirt road.
Aurlandsfjellvegen, the climb from Laerdal for the first nine kilometers is very narrow and almost nightmarish.
The Hardanger has some narrow stretches but nothing insurmountable.

From Laerdal consider going to Flåm.
From there it is possible to take a small train to Myrdal and back.
For those who wish, there is the possibility of making a complete tour that requires a little less than the whole day.
From Flåm to Myrdal Train
From Myrdal to Voss Same Train
From Voss to Gudvangen Bus
From Gudvangen to Flåm Motorboat on the Nærøyfjord (Unesco)
Notes: from disembarking the ship, return to Flåm by shuttle bus).

In Geiranger, don't miss the pedestrian mini-cruise on the fjord.
If you come from the North (so-called Eagle Road) then continue on road 63 and go up to Dalsnibba, unsurpassed view of the fjord (toll road).

Further south, you'll find the Ryfilke and Jaeren routes, perhaps less spectacular but both worth traveling.

Others if they come to me.

Max
