Rosslare, no traffic problems, no traffic lights, charges or congestion. Plus you get to drive in The sunny Southeast and pick up some strawberries along the way. :-)

Dublin every time. 30 mins down the road, 3.50 toll, and a couple of euro in juice

For anyone on the North or North West of the country, Dublin would seem to be the better option, depending on boat departure time, and if you are not bothered by the 3hrs down the irish sea.
I live 30km South of Dublin port, and can get to Rosslare, 130km, in about the same time,
1.1/2 to 2 hrs by road, 3 to4 hrs by sea.
Rosslare for me, plus the possibility of going to Roscoff instead of Cherbourg.

maybe I'm just miserable, but landbridge for us every time in high season. Direct routes just too expensive, and, on a 2 week holiday, lose too much time on the boat. Landbridge , we can be in France for 9 comfortably, on a Saturday morning, finishing work at 2 on a Friday

What's the best time of the day to be catching the eurotunnel from folkestone, I hear the traffic on the motorways at bypass London can be like a carpark at different times of the day

We generally book Dublin/Holyhead 2045 sailing, getting in midnight, drive through night and Dover/Calais/Dunkirk the next morning. Generally book Stena on black Friday for 300ish (25%off) and DFDS from Dover. With DFDS , you can catch a sailing before or after your booked one for no extra cost. Tunnel has never worked out cheaper in high season.

Rosslare works better for us coming up from sun-drenched Skibbereen.
Plus we found Stena Line staff surprisingly friendly and helpful, way better than Irish Ferries.

Could you give a bit more detail. Time of year, Journey time, return fares € or £

As a Londoner, you'll be going across the QE2 bridge at Dartford. Either side of the bridge there are big shopping centres, Lakeside in the north and Bluewater south, traffic will build up at the weekends as the English endulge themselves in the national sport of shopping. During the week several miles of stationary are commonplace at peak times. The M25 can be totally f***ed at any time day or night, as can any motorway in England. I've been stuck in traffic at 2am on the M6 because of a crash.

To answer the question, when I've used it I make sure I'm through the Dartford crossing before traffic has a chance to build up, but Folkstone was about 90 minutes from my house. If I lived in Ireland I'd rather swim to France than drive across England.
