Accommodation on Ferries

Hello All,

I'm new to the board, myself and my wife have done a lot of caravaning around ireland in the last two years. Now I've bought a camper (McLouis Nevis 872) and we are going to hit the continent for a few months so I've got lots of questions and I thought this would be a good place to ask.

So as not to be rude, I did search the forum for an answer to this question before posting, but could find a previous thread.

So anyway, on the ferries between Ireland Spain and Italy, can you stay in your camper? I understand you have to pay for some kind of accommodation be it just a lounge seat or a cabin or whatever, but I'm wondering if I just pay for a lounge seat, can I then stay in my camper on the way over anyway? Or do they not allow you back into your vehicle once you park up? I'm thinking probably not but thought I'd ask the question in case it could save me a few pounds.

I appreciate any info,
Regards,
Waterford Guy

If you are sailing from Rosslare to Bilbao on Brittany Ferries, you definitely cannot stay in your camper. You must book cabin accomodation, if its available. If all cabins are gone, then you can book a reclining seat. No experience of ferries between Spain and Italy, but hopefully others here will help.
Enjoy your new camper and your travels

Okay well that's that so. There's no more seats left on the Rosslare to Bilbao ferry so that trip (return) is gonna cost €1,400 euro, i didn't expect it to be so expensive but hey, you learn something new everyday!

And if you’re travelling with pets on the Ireland/Spain route you require a pet friendly cabin… they sell out quickly. The French route has kennels & Stena allow pets to remain in the van.
Appreciate you may not require this but it’s a heads up in case you do.

Cabin a must in my opinion on any of the routes, definitely no staying in van but a chair is bookable but it’ll be quite a long crossing without a cabin.

staying on a reserved seat on any overnight ferry sucks...even when I was early 20's it was horrible. Cabin is a MUST. Only ferry ive ever heard of where travellers could sleep in van was on some greek ferries, but id say even that is no longer allowed.

Yeah if I can't stay on the van, then I'm getting a cabin. I travelled the world for a year in my twenties and even then, as Hymer said, overnighting on a train in a normal seat was rough, no way I'm doing it 12 years later.

With the cost of the ferry during the summer periods being extremely high have you considered doing a landbridge with Stena and going for example from Dublin to Holyhead then Dover to Calais this could cost in the region of £600. While it wont be into Spain it will get you onto mainland Europe

Not really.
Some companies allow it, the so-called "camping on board".
For instance available on Superfast medium range cruises from Italy to Greece.
Of course on open decks and smooth Mediterranean Sea.

I did consider this, but when I added the cost of doing it that way and then added the extra time it would take me, I decided it was not a good option for me. Thanks for the suggestion though.
