So I had my van in for the DOE today and unfortunately it failed because one of the rear seatbelts has lost it's elasticity! I know that's not the right word....it won't retract so it doesn't really do it's job as a seatbelt. We never have anyone in the back so I hadn't realised it was gone.

So my question is, how do I go about fixing this? It's a VW T5 with a rock and roll bed. I've been googling but am more confused than when I started! Also, I only have 21 days to get it fixed. Is this something a regular garage can fix? Do I need a whole new belt?

Thanks!

Maeve

The simple answer is ,yes replace the belt, it shouldn't be that difficult, its probably on a single bolt mounting on the lower end ( the bit the belt retracts into ) you just need to check the length, measure the whole length of the belt and see how it is bolted to the seat. a photo will help
you should be able to get one from a scrappers.

Or try pulling it out and feeding it back a few times, mechanism possibly stiff from lack of use

You could consider a second hand one if no one uses it

How many seats are listed in that work of fiction called the Registration Certificate. Chech the figure at (S. 2) if it says 2 just remove the back seat belts altogether leaving the remaining 2 for the front seats.
If the cert says 2, whether it's true or false, that's what's 'legally' there to tested.
BTW, legally speaking the mh is only supposed to be travelling with 2 occupants, as S.2 denotes the number of official travel seats, as listed on the vehicles EU Certificate of Conformity

Thanks for all of the advice! I'll try washing it this evening. Unfortunately my van is registered as a 5 seater, three up front and two in the back so all seatbelts need to be working!

How did you get on with washing the seatbelt, did you get it all working properly again?

HI Sean,

It didn't work unfortunately! I ordered a new seatbelt and it didn't come with the part I needed!! Someone gave me two old ones, they didn't work either. I have cried over this lol! Trying to figure out my next options at the moment.

Any chance you could post a photo of the retractor block and how it's mounted.

That’s a pity. I had a slow to no- retracting seat belt once. I read online about washing it. I didn’t think it would work. I was convinced it was the spring rewinding. But I had nothing to lose. And it worked wonders.

If you remove the reel and send me a PM.
I'm sure we can replace the reel if needed.

Looking at the photos it looks like the roll is tight up against one side of the frame and the belt is at an angle to it. Could the problem be related to the lead in to the reel not being at 90°

I have had a look at one I have from a Sprinter the number on the metal part beside the bolt on the roller housing is 2477AJ180.its the same type of mounting as yours, you would get one from the Sprinterman Carlow.
