New rules in France, winter tyres required.

I’ve read on a few different sites new regs for winter tyres while travelling in France during winter months. Not sure if it applies to the routes to and from Spain that some of us use. I’ll try and get the official page and post it up. It comes into force on Nov 1st this year.
The extract below is pulled from another site;

Last winter, the French Ministry of the Interior published changes to regulations on the use of winter tyres in the country’s mountainous regions. Those changes are soon due to enter into force.
Winter chains or tyres will be mandatory from November 1st, 2021 in mountainous areas, reports the French Road Safety Agency (Sécurité routière).
The prefects of 48 departments located in the mountain ranges (The Alps, Corsica, Central Massif, Jura Massif, Pyrenees, Vosges Massif) will soon draw up a list of municipalities where the new vehicle equipment requirement will apply in winter, i.e. from November 1st to March 31st.

Something we may need to be aware of if travelling during the periods mentioned.

The answer for those heading to Spain, is probably snow chain's,
That what I have alway done in winter here, van and car, although I have a spare set of wheels, with snow tyres, that I run on the car from November until March.

Winter tyres or snow chains have always been required when you are at a certain altitude. I have seen the police stopping cars and checking for them. I carry a set of snow chains behind the passenger seat and they are a b***** to get on and off when its freezing. The Michelin Agilis Camping tyres I have are rated MS and definitely give better grip in the snow than the old Michelins

There are two standards, the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake marking and the M+S marking.
The first is a true snow tyre, the second is the next best thing.
Whether the M+S is good enough for the new regulations or not I don't know.
The Michelin Agelis Camping tyre with the M+S marking has bigger spacing between thread blocks and fairly chunky shoulder thread blocks so do perform better in mud and snow than ordinary tyres. The question remains, in the eyes of the law are they 'winter' tyres.

I saw a map online of where it applies and dementia is kicking in as I can’t remember where it was but I do remember that basically every area from east to west along the Spain/France border comes under those regs

If you had to fit winter tyres to all wheels that would make it a very costly holliday,it would seem that 2 snow chains would be a better alternative.

If anyone buys snowchains make sure you practice putting them on before you have to do it for real.

I'm open to correction but I thought snow chains were banned in a lot of Europe. The reason is the chains tearing up the roads. Chains work on deep ice but in Europe, a lot of the roads would have a mix of snow, ice and nothing.

I remember a couple of years ago at Rally Monte Carlo, up in the Alps in January and no car had chains but all had winter tyres (both studded and non studded tyres).

I'd check it out before buying chains. I could be wrong though, just there's something rattling around in the head about it.

You are supposed to take them off when the snow or ice on the road clears. They would probably ruin your tyres eventually if you kept driving on them

Joe, In France at a certain altitude the police stop you and check for chains or winter tyres. I’ve never been stopped but have seen it

I've bought them as an insurance policy. If stopped, I'll have them & will use them if required. Hopefully they'll not see the light of day.
Saying that, on our last trip home we came up the centre of France, via Millau and Clermont-Ferrand and at times the snow was quite deep, and worrying at times. I've not seen any snow on the Toulouse med coast route but the route via Iron and through northern Spain can and frequently does have deep snow.
