So....Renault 120 dci has exact same torque output as Ducato but at 300 revs lower

Renault dCi 120 Engine Technical Data
Number of valves : 16 Valves
Aspiration : Bi-Turbo
Maximum power - Output - Horsepower : 120 PS or 118 bhp or 88 kW @ 3500 rpm
Maximum torque : 300 Nm or 221 lb.ft @ 1500 rpm

Fiat Ducato 2.8 JTD
Brand : Fiat.
Model : Ducato.
Version : 2.8 JTD.
Engine Power : 93 kW (127 PS - 125 hp)
Cylinders : 4 cylinders (Inline configuration)
Volume : 2800 cm3.
Fuel supply system : 16 valves.
Torque : 300 Nm (1800 RPM)

2.1cdi - 313 /40 sprinter
Power 95 kW Horsepower 129 hp
Horsepower 127 bhp
Rev. at Max Power 3800
Torque 300 Rev. at Max Torque 1200 – 2400

So which is best in a Motorhome?
First?.
Trucks carrying heavy loads require ‘high-end torque’ where torque force peaks at a higher RPM. This means the truck would be slower to accelerate, but the level of torque would allow it to handle the extra weight as RPM increased.
Torque is beneficial if you own a truck carrying heavy cargo. Having high torque force as the engine rotation (RPM) increases makes transporting heavy loads far easier and more efficient.

Second?.
Low-end torque, generally means that you have access to more engine power in lower gears. As a result, you won’t have to downshift the gears so often when accelerating from low speeds, and the drive will feel more relaxed.

Merc. 95 kW - 129 hp - Torque: 305 Nm at 1200 – 2400 Rpm
Fiat. 93 kW -125 hp - Torque : 300 Nm at 1800 RPM
Renault. 88 kW - 120 hp - Torque : 300 Nm at 1500 rpm

I have always taught my sprinter was great to drive, very good at getting up to speed from start or after roundabouts, etc, and at 2000rpm it on the open road it did well, the only thing lacking ( apart from the obvious ) was a 6th gear and cruise control.

My idea has always been that the first 4/5 gears are for driving and the last for cruising and economy.

My Knaus had the 120Dci and I can say it was not lacking in power, it was very responsive, never found I had to change down going up a hill

John, What model Knaus was that?

My Ducato 2.8 JTD Power is 147 bhp but more importantly it has 310nm torque from 1500rpm > 3000rpm which makes for very relaxed driving. It pulls so well in 5th. (5 speed box) it's rearly necessary to change down on the average motorway gradients and will pull happily in 4th. on steep 6% gradients.
All the above in fully loaded condition, 3.85t

I'd be interested in hearing about the experience, especially in lockdown. You hear of people sourcing vans in Germany but less so from France.

That is an absolute cracking Motorhome Martin, wish you many years of safe and enjoyable travelling in it.

I know a couple that bought a new one back from France last year during lockdown and had to use a shipping company to trailer it home.

I wonder would the delivery company be persuaded to do a stop off at Normandie Wines?

Fair play Martin. Exciting days 🍾

I will post the details when its on Irish plates, but in the mean time if you want to window shop of do some research, this is what Ive been looking at. UK and German sites for price and spec, as most have limited photo's. mobile.de. is a German site, and you can input your preferences and they will send you notifications.
Intercaravaning.de is another German site, which I really could not get my head around.

The French sites.
https://www.annonces-caravaning.com/
This appears to be a bit like Auto-trader as it has motorhomes /camper-vans and caravans, from all over France from Dealers And private sales, The Bummer is I think it is up to the seller to remove sold vehicles, I found a very nice Hymer Tramp only for it to be sold and the bloody thing is still on the site ( even after I had words with someone on the phone ). but they list everything by Alphabetical order by Brand and some Brand +model, so if you click on a particular brand it will bring you a list of every one of them for sale and you can select price Bracket and or other search criteria to narrow a search.

http://vendezvotrecampingcar.com/ is an agent for private sales base in Caen.

Justine, is a rep who is great to deal with as she has good English and will do a live video of a Motorhome if you are really interested. There sales fees are built into the price quoted so no extra. once paid for they will store it securely untill you can collect. My Buddy got a van from her in September and had no complaints with the deal and was very helpful , She also went hunting on my behalf, for a Hymer Tramp, I found with a private seller, There would have been a fee

https://www.ets-jacqueline.com/
Mainly Normandy they have 5 concessions.

http://www.bretagne-camping-cars.fr.
They have 4 concessions around Brittany, This is who I have a deal with. also once deposit is paid, its yours and final payment is I week before collection or shipping.

Most of all of them, If you Phone they will have someone who will have some English, and then use email to ask your questions they are open to an offer..

In general I think if you budget for between 16% and 18% on top of the asking price is about what you will put one on the road for and then compare that to what you will pay here if you can get a similar one.
Shipping to the port is about €1000.depending.
Stena will ship unaccompanied for around €600. stupidly it is cheaper if you drive it home yourself.
My research so far is outbound on foot single €150, return €360 . One way car hire is about €200 euro on top of the daily rate.
so for the €200 it would be better to have two people go, and then you would have some to drive the hire-car back to the port on a one day hire, no really convenient at this time.
The bonus also would mean 240 bottles of wine instead of 120 ;-)
