That's an AGM battery, unless you're 100% sure your charging system is optimised for AGM batteries, then you're wasting your money.

If you want a Varta battery then the LDF90 is what you want, this is also sold as a Bosch L5013. These are Enhanced Flooded Batteries or EFB's and have supplanted AGM's in most applications where AGMs were used as recently as 5 years ago.

Thanks BM, I am aware it is an AGM battery. I have the facility to charge AGM.
Thanks for the feedback.

Perhaps not the cheapest, but Donaghys seem to fit Varta to their Hymer stock. Might be worth the cost of a phone call.

Yes they are maintenance free
While I would also recommend the LFD 90, that's a very good price on the AGM

20% Discount on Halfords Batteries with the Axa Plus Card, so you'll get one for €108.

If you're insured with Dolmen you can get the card but you might get away with just showing them the insurance cert in the meantime.

Those Halford batteries are a real pig in a poke, personally, I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.
The one you mentioned includes 200 cycles but without the DoD (Depth of Discharge) to which the 200 is relevant.
The number of cycles a battery is capable of when taken to a particular DoD is the only real way of determining its long term capability.

50% DOD is the benchmark for Lead Acid cyclic testing unless otherwise stated

EFB Technology (Mid-Range)

Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) technology is a recent addition to the market, introduced primarily to aid vehicle manufacturers in meeting emissions control requirements in entry level start-stop vehicles. Typical vehicle manufacturer standards require that these batteries survive more than 200 cycles at 50% DOD which correlates to 50-60 cycles at 100% DOD. This makes EFB batteries suitable for mid-range leisure requirements where some degree of cyclic durability is required.

I’m currently doing some recabling of power distribution and tidying around my battery compartment. I’m creating space to add a second battery and was looking at those Halfords, the HLB 700. I have the HLB 618 (only 80 cycles) that I think might be on the way out.

Great link

My last two pair of batteries 2005 > 2012 and 2012 > 2018 were semi-traction (Varta and Banner Energy Bull) and they took a lot of abuse. Current ones Monbat Deep Cycle, 2018 > are still working well and they were less than half the price of replacement Banners.
I do a lot of off-grid, relying on a B2B charger when on the road and Solar when parked up and rarely take an ehu unless it's included in the pitch price.

I have 2 x HLB 700 batteries since April 19, they seem to be OK but unfortunately they haven't had much use in the last year and I have no idea how long they'll last, but you do get a 2 year guarantee

Does anyone know if a battery guarantee is any good. Surely they are going to say it was misused. Just asking..,.

Halfords seem to be excellent in this regard. Our son was visiting us at Christmas in his ancient Toyota Yaris which had been having battery problems since he acquired it 6 months previously. He went to our local Halfords on Sunday 27th Dec to buy a new battery. They immediately identified it as one of theirs, scanned it and said it was covered by warranty, fitted a replacement and gave him a name to contact in his local Halfords if he had any more problems. I must say I was impressed.

Plus €71 postage, possibly worth a look if you were buying a new van for long-term ownership

Have a look again at that, when I looked it stated cannot ship to Ireland from Poland, it will ship from China for €71.
delivery would probably on Yak 9 transport.😁

That's ok if you're not in a hurry. If it doesn't arrive in three months you get your money back. If it arrives later it's yours to keep for free. This has already happened to me and others I know :-)

I normally use Tayna batteries in N Wales as I find them very reasonable
They used to ship to Europe but I’m unsure what the story is now.
You can normally chip a bit off the price if you phone them

All jokes aside, there must be massive markups (100%) or more along the way to retailers in the leisure sector when one considers similar 100ah LiFePO4 batteries are listed at €800 or more, and they probably mostly come from China anyway.

A LiFePo battery would be nice alright, should be robust to 80%DoD which means that a 100AH battery would give a usable capacity equivalent to 160AH Lead Acid.

Shipping from China however leaves you open to possibility of 10%CCT and 21% VAT on the cost including shipping which would tip it up to €570. Small packets slip under the customs radar, I doubt this would. Even if you split an order for two of them with someone else to get free shipping it's going to tip €475. Could still be worthwhile if you need the extra usable capacity in the same form factor as something like the LFD90 or HLB700.
