Buncrana Aire

The country cousins have taken over the Aire in Buncrana today. We got there this evening and there are two caravans, two motorhomes and two construction vans parks sideways across the spaces. They seemed to be setting up as they were trying to figure out how the electric worked.

We pulled in to fill up our water and then decided to head on down to the beach at Loch Swilly Marina instead. Good few vans here now.

That is a pity, nice Aire but a bit tight. Caravans should not be tolerated on an Aire

Yeah nice aire, could do with a toilet emptying point and some bins though. Not very many places in Donegal so far to get rid of rubbish if you're here for an extended period of time.

Free to park, €5 card to use the electric, the card lasts a long time though.

We stayed a few nights ago and a kind person leaving told us they had left their card with €4.40 on it in the point. We used it for the night and there was still €4 on it the next morning, we left it there for someone else to find.

A few complaints to the Council about the bad parking and the caravans might be no harm.

I thought this aires was at the tourist office surly they can see caravans parked there and explain that it is only for camper vans

It was after 6pm when we got there and they were only there a short time. The tourist office closes at 5pm.

Tourist office at the aire if It is open, if not the filling station/shop across the road.

All over the south east,this is an old photo ,( the red unit ) they now have two, one black bag general €7.50. clean recycle €4.

They started closing up the size of the openings in the public bins when people started using them for their household rubbish instead of paying the wheelie bin charges. The handiest way of getting rid of unwanted cardboard and plastic is to remove it, and there's a lot of it, and leave it in the supermarket after checkout.

Thanks I'll keep an eye out for those they look the job. We usually do our long trips in France and the UK where there are big bins everywhere and surprise, surprise no problems with litter.

When we're away for weekends here we usually just bring it home with us. Traveling for a few weeks in Ireland this time it starts to get a bit ripe if you can't get rid of it.

Have done a few hikes here since we've been on the road, no bins provided and litter everywhere. I don't understand our logic sometimes.

The reason.
In those countries and others, the bin collection is funded from local taxes.
Not here though, our councils decided to sell off the service to private operators who charge each household.
The result, no communal bins and lots of litter and fly-tipping AND nowhere for motorhome based tourists to get rid of rubbish :(

The reason comes back to the refusal of households to pay either local taxes or to pay a direct charge to the local authority for refuse. We ended up with privatised bin collection as a direct result of the orchestrated campaign by our 'socialist' parties against taxes
