3D printing tools

My son Nathan, is on summer holidays at the moment, and with no summer job to keep him busy he has a lot of spare time on his hands.
Not being one for watching idle hands lie, I asked him to do a few projects for me.
One of them being a tool used for torquing the spindle nuts on my rear axle.

The tool is available to buy in the US for $20 (plus tax, shipping & import duties), but I wanted to see if a plastic one would be up to the job.

So he got busy on the computer, designing the part and then printing it. This was the stuff of science fiction when I was his age.

:D

webcam bracket I made for mine as I can't use the windscreen. Mind you it took more than 1 design attempt!! Have lots of projects lined up. 3D printing and campervans go hand in hand :-)

Nice job Rory, that looks good.

Same here! The first "test piece" only had 10% infill and a relatively thin outer wall so it was a bit weak. Having said that, I was impressed that it coped with +50ftlbs of torque before it shattered!

The second piece was 100% infill. Much more sturdy

A lot of the stuff in the pic has been printed including quite a few parts on the printer itself :-)

Nate uses an Ender 3 printer.

The first thing that folks seem to do after buying their first printer, is start upgrading it with purchased and printed parts! Nate was no different. Self levelling height sensors, wireless Pi controller, upgraded feed mechanism, cooling fans, magnetic pad, etc etc. It seems to be a fun hobby.

He is already talking about going bigger.

Plug & play with a few samples of filament. He also bought a couple of filament rolls for about €20 per 1kg roll.

Have a look here:

I have a Prusa Mk2.5S Latest model is the MK3 @ €769 for kit version - https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/3d…s-kit.html

It's not cheap but has a lot of stuff built in. I've added a Pi server with a webcam and not much else but rebuilt it a few times as these things need maintenance - they're not like paper printers. You have 3 distinct areas - design, splicing & printing - to learn about. Filament is relatively cheap @€25 for a roll of PLA/PETG - some of my more useful prints have cost me less than a euro to print - hours in design though. thingiverse.com is brilliant. Lots there if you want to bypass the design stage and go straight to splicing and printing.
