Recommendations for 80-90Ah Batteries

 ·
Posted: 30.07.2018  ·  #1
I'm going to replace the leisure batteries in my van in a couple of weeks and the charger can only handle 180Ah although I do have solar panels.

Can anyone recommend batteries in the 80-90Ah range? I see a few online from Numax or Motobat. I think I've seen Numax recommended on this forum.

I might as well replace both batteries while I'm at it.

Thanks

Halfords only do 70 or 115 Ah batteries I think.

I wonder could I push to 95Ah batteries since I have the solar panels?

Batteries are a minefield.

After much research (Read here if you dare) I changed to two Trojan 27tmx deep cycle batteries earlier this year and they have been great so far.
They do a 85ah called a Trojan 24tmx.

Well worth considering in my opinion and a pair would be 170ah.
They can be drained much lower than a leisure battery without causing damage and recover quickly.

Mine were £168 each but I have no idea how much the 24tmx would be.
Try googling it.

Thanks! They do seem very tall though so will need to measure under the seats to be sure I have enough room

Yes they are taller (due to the deep cycle capacity). If you need low box type batteries (usually 190mm) your options will be restricted but be careful what you buy.

If you must buy low box check the NCC scheme grades paying particular attention to the number of cycles.

Download the NCC list HERE

Just replaced both of mine with 90 ah Numax bought from eBay seller next day delivery.
Have had several Numax on different vehicles from local garage over the years and always been pleased with them

Same here replaced two Numax with Numax again a month or two ago, never heard of the make but the original batteries were in the van six years and never missed a beat until they finally died.

They also do 80 AH..... https://www.halfords.ie/campin…re-battery

I recently replaced my 2 leisure batteries with the 115 AH versions.....very happy with them.

Just doing some research and found a battery that looks good - Varta LFD90 90Ah (also known as the Bosch L5013).

I can only find one retailer in Ireland (North or South) for it, marineparts.ie, and they are out of stock. I'll email now for a lead time.

Anyone aware of other Varta/Bosch stockists on the island?

Another thing to consider is wether you mostly use hookup or not.

The one you mention is only 200 cycles on the NCC list.

Correct, it is. I'd estimate that it would be rare enough with no hook-up and that battery meets my requirements. I guess I'd be wild camping for as long as it takes the toilet cassette to fill and with the kids we did that in 24 hours over the weekend. I'm sure my mate was sending his kids into my toilet also to save him having to empty his cassette.....

The Varta/Bosch battery
- 90Ah so two of them will be 180Ah which is my chargers max
- 190mm high so will go under the seat

I contacted Tanya and they will ship two batteries over for £20 which is not bad.

Marineparts.ie can also get them within a couple of days.

Hats off to Tanya Batteries. Ordered Tuesday afternoon and two days later, DPD just delivered the batteries.

I'll check the voltages etc when I get home and make sure they are in good condition. €235 in total for two Varta 90Ah batteties delivered to Co. Louth.

Sorry this is a stupid question. But apart from space saving are two 90ah any different from the Varta180ah

Just curious.

I read somewhere that the more cells the better. That is why a lot of people are going for 4 X 6 volt batteries. 2 pairs in series then wired in parallel. (24 cells)

A 180ah 12 volt battery would have 6 cells.
Maybe someone will correct me on that.

In my case I needed two smaller ones to fit under the seats. Besides that you have some redundancy with two smaller batteries instead of a single bigger one

Maybe that is another reason why some people go for 4x6 volts

I have just finished reading your original post leading up to the purchase of the Trojan 27TMX and was wondering if you are still happy with their performance. We are looking at replacing the ones that came with the unit and we put a lot of draw on them.
