Hi all.
I was under my van yesterday looking at oil filter as I was going to try change the oil and I accidentally touch the fan housing which moved and a further look tells me it appears to be only supported at the top and swings loose like it’s just hinged on the top I’m wondering is this normal as would have thought it should be fixed solidly to prevent any movement .
Any thoughts from more knowledgeable folk please
Stay safe

It’s Fiat Ducato 130 2016 .
The movement is at the bottom of the fan housing ,it swings like a hinge moment ,u can move it back forward about one inch ,it seems secure at the top end ,perhaps it’s designed this way I don’t know.

Don’t think it should move is there no holes in the bottom of the fan cover where bolts should be maybe they have come loose and are now gone

From my observations it looks like a complete one piece plastic unit which is positioned directly behind the radiator with the fan mounted in the centre of the plastic unit .
No bolt holds are visible
No place I can see where clips could have been fitted .
It more looks like it was stuck or glued originally but I could be wrong .
I have put a self tapping screw in the bottom of the plastic housing with an L shaped shelp support bracket and put a cable tie on the bracket and fastened it to the front undercarriage.
Hoping I did the right thing ,it’s secured it now tight not moving but hoping I haven’t created new problem
Any advice welcomed

Spin the fan by hand (with engine off) to make sure it spins freely,
If its spinning freely its a good thing,

I’m a bit surprised that you haven’t had more info coming your way on this. It’s a very common base machine. I wouldn’t get committed to doing anything radical yet. I feel a comphrensive answer is coming soon

I have been under my van, no room for me (fat) and my I pad. My van is a 2015 model Ducato 2287cc I guess it is a 130 but no paperwork to hand.

I used my phone and have not uploaded photos from it before so not sure this will work.

The bottom moulding of my radiator fan housing has a locating lug which seats into slot on the metal crossbar. I cannot see up past the base of mine but I am guessing the lug seats first and then the screws you mention secure the top end.

Hi Davy.
Thanks for the photos appreciated.
I guess I must go under again and have closer as I didn’t see that lug on mine but my observation and eyes may not be the best and it is quite tight underneath.
I look tomorrow spin the fan and see if there is a lug I can slot the housing into hopefully as I’m comfortable with the cable tie. Solution.
Thanks all great help.

The lug is black plastic and is part of the rear moulding about mid point across the chassis. Just to the right of the fan as you lie looking up at it. It is about 2 cm long and about 50mm and fits into a slot on the metal (looks like alloy) cross piece. There is a definite cut out in the cross piece (front edge) for the lug to fit.

I wonder has your fan housing simply not had the lug located before the upper fixings were secured. A clue would be that the black plastic housing should rest close against the metal cross piece. Only enough room to slide a piece of paper or thin card into. My guess is that if the lug is there it will stop the housing from sitting snug.

This of course assumes we have the same engine, but it seems likely. There is No movement in my housing or fan. Hope you get a good fix sorted.

Hi Davy.
I see clear now from u last photo and ur good description they way it is supposed to be fixed in place.
Today it’s been bucket down so can’t get underneath until it gets bit dry.
I will let u know my findings as I think ur correct it was most likely never fitted properly from day one or the lug to lock into is just not there.
May thanks again for ur time and effort as I’m unhappy with what I done with the cable tie to secure it.
Will let u know the outcome.

Hi Davy.
I was under the van today .
As I look up at the plastic housing I do see the lug the same as in ur photo but there is no cross member to insert it into in fact there is nothing whatsoever underneath the plastic housing,
Also on mine there is two radiators a big one directly in front of the fan and lower smaller one which is where the bottom of the plastic housing rest against it..
Also there is 2 fans in my housing .
Perhaps mine is different set up or some genius left out a part when it was manafactured .
What u think .

My van also has two radiators. The large one is rearmost on my van and is (I assume) my conventional engine radiator. There is a smaller one in front of the large one which I always assumed was part of an auxiliary heater circuit which I have mounted on the floor of the van behind the drivers seat. Immediately behind the bigger radiator there are 2 fans mounted side by side. It is the back of the housing that has the plastic lug which locates into the crosspiece. This amounts to the total of my technical and mechanical knowledge so I will have to defer to any one else on the forum with expertise.

Perhaps a phone call to a dealer or even a fiat dealer may throw some light on the mystery. The fiat owners forum may be worth asking. Free and fairly friendly it might provide an answer until you can perhaps even visit a Fiat dealer.

https://www.fiatforum.com/

The other course of action (when movement is permitted ) would be to chat to Donaghey’s of Letterkenny and perhaps arrange a visit. They have the advantage of being both Motorhome dealers and a Fiat professional franchise. You don’t indicate where you are based but you can stay overnight at their location and you can extend your stay to spend time in Donegal which is jumping with places to overnight.

I have attached a photo of the radiator positioning in my van facing the back of the engine bay of course. Can’t see to get a photo behind the radiator.

I dare say a bit more digging will get you an answer.

There can be up to three 'radiators' in modern vehicles, as in the second photo, but not in fact radiators in the conventional sense.
1, The one nearest the engine is the traditional radiator for the engine coolant
2. The one in the middle is the heat exchanger for the air condition (if fitted)
3. The outer one is the intercooler to cool the air passing from the turbo to the engine.

While the engine rad and the intercooler are usually mounted as above the turbo intercooler can be in a different location but it will always be in a place where there is direct airflow.

BTW some vehicles can have a two more, an oil-cooler to help keep the engine oil from overheating and a transmission fluid cooler (on vehicles with automatic gearboxes)

Baguette that’s a lot great info which I was unaware of ,I was under the impression there was just radiator for cooling engine how wrong can u be.thanks for that.
Davy ur photos show me that my van looks different from urs .
I looked again today in between the heavy rain and see my plastic housing is held in place on the top by clips whit a screw in them and similar down the side but at the bottom there is nothing to clip onto or a place to put the lug into that is located in the centre bottom of the housing the same as urs.
I am going to try bring it a fiat dealer when ever they reopen and get there opinion on why this anomaly is the case in mine.
