Shared Camper Insurance and NCB

 ·
Posted: 11.05.2020  ·  #1
Hi,

We're buying a campervan and will be sharing it with another couple. We have a concern that if I were to insure it and then the other couple have a claim that it will be my cars no claims bonus that will take the hit.

Any ideas how to work around this ?
Is it possible that each couple could each take out their own policy ?

Insure it twice? Not sure if that's legal or not :/

If they have a "drive another car" option on their insurance they would be claiming off their own insurance, so you wouldn't put them on the policy.

I didn't think MH Insurance would effect your private car insurance should there be an accident :-/

You are meant to tell your car insurance if you claim at all, even if it is not related AFAIK.

That sounds like a good option.....Do many car policies cover driving of a camper ? I assume they would need to transfer their insurance to it as "driving another car" would at best be third party.

It's driving a vehicle, not just a car. if you are licensed to drive and it is not hired. My insurance with Adrian Flux allows me to drive any vehicle fully comp.

Does my car insurer need to know that I own a camper and am insured with a different insurer on it? I have never considered that before.

Thanks but don't think this will work for us. Here is Aviva policy wording
is solely a Private car. This cover
does not
include the driving of
any commercial vehicles, camper
vehicles
, vans, car-vans, vans
adapted to carry passengers or
vehicles used for hire or reward
such as a taxi or a hackney car;

No idea.

I have recently been moving all my insurance to one company NFU, we have been with them for years for buildings insurance and they offered good deals. When my Camper insurance needs renewed that will go there also.

I doubt they need to know you have a camper insured. However they will need to know about any accidents, claims or convection even if they were in the camper....You are asked all those questions at policy setup and it's a get our for insurance company if you have not told truth or have not notified them of a material change since you initially gave answers.

Sounds like a recepie for unfriending. Open driving or named drivers would be all well and good until the point where someone other than the policy holder does something that leads to a claim.

If you're determined to go down the route of shared ownership, you could each insure it year on / year off. You'd be sharing the risk.

I have had claims on both Car/Van , and neither claim affected the other policy, I did inform the companies about the other claim, they just said thanks, that's noted ,no action taken , these claims were in ROI don't know about NI

The worse you can do is jump to a conclusion from things you read on a forum (in this case at least).

Ask your insurance companies, present the situation and make sure that you're all aligned with what you want to achieve. Should the worse happen, you pay the insurance to be protected buy they will not be your friendly company when it comes to it, they'll apply what's signed on the paper and they will bail if there's any irregularities.

Talk to them, agree the terms and make sure that what you think is actually covered to avoid surprises.

That's another opinion on a forum that I just recommended you not to take :D :D :D
