Hi All

Been on lock- down for last 8 weeks and hopefully by July to be back on the road .
Very few tourist are going to visit our shores in the present climate . I will not be going abroad this year spending my money in Ireland & I hope the motorhome community will do the same
Every tourist destination / City in Ireland will be looking for people to visit their tourist destination and spend money
Galway city Business & city Council will be asking for people to visit their city
European, Americans tourist may stay home rather than visit Ireland
We all know the Motor home community spend a lot of money when they visit a place
I think now is the time for the Motor home community to push for Galway city council and Galway Dock to allow us to say on the docks or provide us with a safe place to stay .

People power/ Motor-home Power . lets push now

I appreciate where you are coming from but if they cannot make us welcome without us having to plead with them then they can get stuffed.
There will be plenty of other towns and villages that will be glad to see us coming and we can spend our money there.
That is just my view, but Galway city deserve everything that comes their way or to put it a different way they deserve to miss out on every motorhome that takes its business to another village, town or city.

We will probably be welcomed in Galway while the oversea tourists are absent. Once they are back though, I wouldnt be so sure. I swerve Galway and will continue to .

Right lads,

What would it take to get you all to visit our wonderful city of Galway,?

I mean its got loads to offer right??

Night life is (was before corona anyway) booming 7 nights a week,

Museum,
Choice of Cinema's
Food to suite all tastes,
A warm welcome to all from shop/pub/restaurant/fuel station/ etc etc,

If a simple aire was developed at a suitable location, say Galway docks for example or similar that is either walking distance to city centre or near a bus route,

Would that get you to visit Gakway then??

Im getting sick of blaa blaa avoid Galway avoid Galway......spend your money else where, its needed and wanted in Galway the same as any other,

All because the city council will not provide an aire,

Its not the business people in Galway that an unwelcoming its the council offical's that wont ok the aire,

Thoughts please?

It’s sad if it took an global pandemic to get the gobshites to see the error of their ways, but if it took that then so be it.
It’s almost poetic justice that the council have to come out with the begging bowls to get the ‘native tourist’ to go to Galway in order they can survive..... pity it took this to make them see it...... however -
If they were to provide a service for us motorhomers, a simple parking place with basic services then I’m sure some will go there and enjoy what’s on offer, some won’t and will shun the place.
The underlying question?... will we still be welcome when the yankees and overseas visitor comes back?, will they want ‘tramps like us’ around the place once more?. If they were to take steps to assure the Irish motorhoming community that they are sincere regarding their intentions then let’s adopt a ‘forgive & forget’ attitude and go and enjoy the biggest city on the west coast...... time will tell, time will bring out their true colours and time will tell if they are a shower of dicks like a large proportion of this community think they are.

Sick if it? It was one of your responses on here that won the Facebook argument on wether Galway was welcoming or not. So don't you come of with that 😛 I actually used your statement.

But yes I agree with everything you have said. Galway City Council are blind. But to be honest I agree with NTG's post above, they take no heed of anything, so unless that changes I'll go elsewhere.

All I want is to legally park where I chose, on street parking or car park, pay the parking fee where applicable and not be discriminated against because of the type of vehicle that I drive.

Facebook

Could this be one time that it might come in usefull ?

So with the replys so far it seems that the people (a frustrated me included by the way as I live 25 miles out of the city) would park in galway's safe parking area, throw a few quid in the meter and then spend a few hours in the city enjoying the bars, restaurants, or what ever, leaving our money in various outlets what ever it may be,

So where im getting is that Galway is not really the enemy just lacking a safe parking spot,

So if Galway were to potentially open an aire people dont have this idea that its a no go area, the council will have a smirk if a facility was available and not used,

If there was an Aire, it would be used a lot. That's what we have all been hoping for.

Galway is not the enemy, Galway City Council is. Ask the Buskers? 🥴

Ann Connoly on Facebook reckons Galway can be used by Motorhomers, yet quite the opposite is reported by others.

No, it'll just get lost with all the other stuff that gets posted.

If something was started here though I would promote the topic on social media. Entirely different and workable.

Right lads,

What would it take to get you all to visit our wonderful city of Galway,?

A CHANGE OF CITY COUNCIL.

I mean its got loads to offer right??

( IF YOUR AN AMERICAN OR EUROPEN TOURIST OFF A BUSS, SPENDING THEIR MONEY IN OVERPRICES HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS.)

Nightlife is (was before corona anyway) booming 7 nights a week,

(IF YOUR INTERESTED IN DRUK, HEN AND STAG PARTIES)

Museum, ( ?? )
Choice of Cinema's ( BETTER THEN YOU CAN WATCH ON YOUR OWN TELLY ? )
Food to suit all tastes, ( BUT NOT NECESSARILY ALL POCKETS )

A warm welcome to all from shop/pub/restaurant/fuel station/ etc etc,
( THIS I WOULD PROBABLY AGREE )

If a simple aire was developed at a suitable location, say Galway docks for example or similar that is either walking distance to city centre or near a bus route,

Would that get you to visit Gakway then??
( A DECLARATION FROM THE CITY TRADERS WELCOMING MOTORHOMERS )

I'm getting sick of blaa blaa avoid Galway avoid Galway......spend your money else where, its needed and wanted in Galway the same as any other,
( THEN GALWAY TRADERS AND PEOPLE NEED TO SORT OUT THE SELF INTERESTED COUNCILORS )
( REMEMBER THEY ARE A REFLECTION OF THE PEOPLE WHO ELECTED THEM)

All because the city council will not provide an aire,
( NO. BECAUSE THEY DO NOT WANT MOTORHOMES IN THEIR CITY. AND DONT SEEM TO BE ANSWERABLE TO ANYONE BUT THEMSELVES AND THE PARTY LINE )

It's not the business people in Galway that an unwelcoming its the council official's that won't ok the aire,

( WHO IS PAYING, WHAT IS PROBABLY AN EXORBITANT RATES.? THE VERY SAME BUSINESS PEOPLE, WHO ARE CONSPICKIOUS BY THEIR SILENCE )

Thoughts, please?

HOW MANY POLI-TICKS ARE ON THE COUNCIL ( I RECEIVED AN ANSWER FROM ONE AND A LOT OF BULLSHIT FROM ANOTHER )
THE REST WERE PROBABLY HOLIDAYING IN ANOTHER CITY. ON THEIR EXPENSE ACCOUNT.

John.

I stayed at the docks before it closed and had a great time in the city.
I would rate the docks site as my second favorite Irish city stop after cobh.(I know you have to travel by train into cork)
I'd definitely go back, but they don't seem to want us, unless we take the car and stay in a hotel or stay in a campsite.
I personally would need no facilities beyond parking and can't see why they wouldn't at least provide that.
There's no enjoyment parking up anywhere Galway and spend all your time away from the van
going back to feed a meter and wondering is there going to be a parking fine on the windscreen

How many larger urban areas cater for motorhomers, realistically? The only one I have heard of lately is Limerick city. And that is not specifically dedicated for motorhomes. And I don't consider Cobh to be an urban center, as welcome as it is.

I think this thread has lost its way a little. Afaik there has been zero movement or no indication that they have changed their position in relation to Motorhomes. There just appears to be a hopefulness that they might, considering the position we all find ourselves in. I see no reason to be optimistic about MH parking in Galway.

How many times do ye want a kick up the ass? we used to go there regularly when we had the last Motorhome and only stopped going when we were no longer welcome, Yes John I would go again but the powers that be in Galway will have to move and come cap in hand to us this time, If the business in Galway wanted us they should do some thing about it and not just talk. the same thing happened in Dunmore east a few years ago with the business saying they were totally behind us yet they weren't to be seen when it came to the crunch. I haven't set foot in Dunmore east since and Ill treat Galway the same if they don't make a move.

Yes Pat that is exactly my feelings,we have been there many times in the past and this is no reflection on the people of that area just a statement to the powers that be.
I will be nowhere near a place that has an ass hole waiting to ticket me at the first opportunity.
If a proper Aires was established at a reasonable charge then I would return but for now I will spend my money where I feel welcome.

To be clear this is the current official position of Galway City Council, it was handed to me by a warden a few years ago

The quoted Bye-laws state:
15 (a)

A camper van, caravan, mobile home or vehicle otherwise used for accommodation purposes shall not be parked overnight in a public carpark within the administrative area of Galway City.

Appendix IV states:

The following carparks are subject to these Bye Laws together with any other carparks to which the Council obtain a legal, equitable or proprietary interest in into the future.
Dyke Road
Cathedral Carpark
Mill Street Carpark
Bowling Green Carpark
“The Sports Ground” Carpark, College Road

Appendix V states:

Prohibition on Parking of Temporary Dwellings
1. R336 – On Seapoint Promenade from its junction with Grattan Road to D’Arcy Roundabout
2. R336 – On Salthill Road Upper from D’Arcy Roundabout to a point 100m. west of its junction with Threadneedle Road (R338)
3. LT50187 – On Quincentennial Drive from its two junctions with Seapoint Promenade (R336) to junction at rear of National
Aquarium to a point 102 metres north east of this junction.
4. LS05015 – On Rockbarton Road from its junction with Salthill Road Upper (R336) to its junction with Revagh Road (LT 50152).
5. LP01002, LP01010, LP01011, LP01012 & LP01013 – On Western Distributor Road from its junction with Bishop O’Donnell
Road (R338) at Deane Roundabout to its junction with Cappagh Road Roundabout (LS05004).

So it looks like a motorhome can be parked anywhere in Galway except in the five plus car parks and five roadways mentioned which probably leaves only undesirable locations, so just take the by-pass and give the city a miss.

Colin no disrespect to anyone within that city, but to the warden that handed you this notification, you will need us before we need you.

Go to Galway if you want a sour taste

Kay and myself had a wonderful few weeks in West Cork, Kerry, Clare and Tipperary, where we generally wild camped in car parks or the side of the road in some towns. Our must haves are an outdoor swim and some beer from the tap and got both of these in Valentia, Cahersiveen, Ballybunion and the real jewel was Kilkee for 3 nights. Here we parked up right on the beach and only 20 meters from clean toilet facilities. Hats off to Clare COCo as there was constant council staff keeping the beach area and facilities in excellent condition.
Not once in the previous 2 weeks were we approached by a Garda or any other official and ticketed or asked to move. Not even when we overnighted just off the main street in Cahersiveen and only 50 yards from the Garda station.
But this all changed when we crossed over the Galway county boundary.
We spent last Friday night in Dromineer and headed off early Saturday Morning and crossed the Shannon into Portumna. While I am aware and had previously been to the Portumna Aire, there is no area here for a swim So we followed the sign posts and sat nav to a lakeside beach half a mile from the town. Massive car park, toilet facilities and life guarded beach but alas it also had the dreaded height restriction barriers. Parked up at the turning area outside the barriers, making sure we were in no way an obstruction to anyone. I had a lovely swim returned to our MH, got out the deck chairs and brewed up. At Midday a Garda car entered the car park and stayed for an hour - doing what I don't know as there was only a handful of cars parked. Eventually they came out and approached me. The blond Ban Garda berated me for parking at a roundabout. I replied that this was not a roundabout but a turning area and that in no way was I causing a nuisance or an obstruction. The older gent Garda in the passenger seat gave me a wink so I ate humble pie while the power tripper continued her castigation. After spending Saturday night in a car park in Athenry we headed off and found a parking spot on the seafront just outside Leisureworld in Salthill at midday Sunday. Off I go for my swim and a stroll down the promenade to Seapoint. While sitting outside a cafe and having a cuppa and bite I noticed an officious looking man - not in uniform but carrying a radio and some other machine hanging from his belt. I commented to Kay that he must be a parking superintendent. However, this man ignored the cars parked in bus stops, taxi ranks and double yellow lines.
We eventually returned to our MH to find the dreaded note under our wiper and noticed the same on other MHs parked at the prom. Started watching the snooker on the tv and after an hour the same official knocked on my door. He told me I would get a ticket if I was still here in an hour. I replied that as I was in a passenger vehicle, paid all my taxes, etc. had every right to park anywhere a car could. I challenge him that he was directed to target motorhomes as I had observed him earlier ignoring other illegally parked cars. Of course he denied all this.
Usually, I would loose my cool and tell the official where to stuff his flyers and tickets but instead informed him to tell his bosses that I now had proof of the deliberate targeting of MHs. There are paying officials probably double pay for Sunday work to get motorhomes out
So I still have the sour taste after being encouraged to staycation.
One question here needs to be thought through - can a local bye law take precedent over national legislation.

Hi Jokee,

As a Galway man I 100% agree with your comments especially the disgraceful and illegal way Galway City Council treat motorhome owners. I like to do wild camping now and again also but am very conscious that the whole staycation thing is about spending money in the areas I visit to try to keep local jobs and give back to the communities.

Just a thought... This note being placed under windscreen wipers is unwanted and unsolicited. Should the offenders be reported for littering?

It's a pity you didn't Video him, bypassing the illegally parked cars and ticketing only motorhomes, have you got photos of the offending cars for evidence.with your or the other motorhome in the frame?
You should also forward your post to as many newspapers as you have time to as well as the minister for tourism and every member of Galway CoCo.
Only remove the ( blond Ban ) There are no such species and the Gent description. when you say she further down everyone will know what you mean.
