It appears for the first time in aLong time that the number of new cases of people infected with virus has dropped and the number of deaths per day has also dropped. Spain’s overall numbers are still shocking but perhaps they might have turned the corner.
Coronavirus - MONDAY 6th April

Today´s report shows the lowest figures for the last 7 days. Please, remain at home, we all are going to defeat this virus.

Our condolences to the families.

Yeah if theres no cure it wont stop ,you would have to eradicate it and then close your borders

For me the news is positive, less new cases, less deaths should in turn lead to the badly overstretched resources being able to deal more quickly and effectively with the existing cases and indeed new cases. Possibly a higher ratio of ventilators to the numbers of patients that require them. After week on week increases any sign of a slow down can only be good especially if the trend continues.

I agree but if less people have the virus then the spread should reduce and an awful lot of people have finally learnt to wash their hands and have generally improved their hygiene practices. Hopefully a cure will come and more effective methods to treat infected people.

A slow down in the virus is positive news for everyone Jamie. How long does this lockdown continue? It didnt take long for the virus to spread in the first place from a single source, so unless a cure or vaccine is found we are going to see it spread again as soon as were told the lockdown is over.

Slowing it down is of coarse good. It flattens the curve, and our hospitals can better manage. If the end game is that 60% of the world's population will eventually get it anyway, well its just going to take longer, and we will better manage. Medically anyway, whatever about economically. But it's hard to see what the end game is here. If we decide we have peaked our number of cases in Ireland and it's time relax the restrictions then we will surely see a second spike.

One positive piece of news hopefully is that trials are taking place on the BCG vaccine (tuberculosis) which was mandatory in this country for all babies born from the 1950s up to 2015. It was also mandatory in other countries like Portugal, some Eastern European countries as well as Japan, all of which 'seem' to be showing relatively lower infection and mortality rates to some of their neighbours. Hence the trials taking place in the Netherlands, Australia and few other countries who's hospitals have begun vaccinating some of its hospital staff to measure its effectiveness.

Of coarse correlation does not equal causation so we'll let the scientists work on that. But if that vaccine was effective, it would be a game changer. It's been around for decades so has passed all its clinical trials, so could be rolled out immediately and wouldn't need to go down the long road of phased trials. Got to keep positive!

The travel restrictions should in my opinion continue for as long as necessary, I know for many it’s hard but the reality is that the virus has to be slowed down to a more manageable level. A vaccine would be excellent but in the mean time a reduction in deaths and painful illness would be a great start,

Washington post.

Coughing tiger at the Bronx Zoo tests positive for coronavirus, ‘first case of its kind’

April 6, 2020 at 11:21 a.m. GMT+1

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, becoming the first known animal in the United States to contract the virus, the zoo and federal officials revealed Sunday.

The 4-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia was tested for the virus after she and several other lions and tigers came down with a dry cough starting March 27, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a statement. Officials believe that an asymptomatic zookeeper carrying the virus somehow transmitted the disease to the tiger while caring for the animals.

The Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the Bronx Zoo, said it wanted to test Nadia “out of an abundance of caution,” hoping to ensure “any knowledge we gain about COVID-19 will contribute to the world’s continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus.”

Her test was confirmed positive at the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories, in what the agency described as “the first case of its kind.”

The tiger’s positive diagnosis follows scattered reports around the world of other animals contracting the virus, raising concerns among pet owners about whether their animals could be at risk. Officials in Hong Kong have discovered covid-19 in at least one cat and two dogs quarantined with their infected owners, while a cat in Belgium showed some signs consistent with the virus after its owner returned from Italy and later tested positive.

Seemingly they were the pets of people that had tested positive,

Whatever about cats and dogs. I don’t suppose many of us would be getting close enough to tigers and lions to worry about the virus. I’d be more worried about their teeth. 😳. Seriously though I don’t think there is any evidence that animals are giving it to humans, except for the obvious one
