Fiat Ducato 2.8 diesel Engine fan

Hi all,

The engine fan in my MH started running louder than usual over the weekend and it is now staying on for a minute or so after the engine is turned off. This is happening even if I just start it up for a few seconds. Is this something I should be concerned about?
Would the van have a DPF that is trying to go through regeneration? It’s a 2005 2.8l diesel Fiat Ducato.

It is certainly well worth getting any changes that you notice investigated, although my 2016 Fiat 2.3 has the fan run on for a minute or so if the weather is hot. It has also come on when I start the engine, but I suspect both of these scenarios are temperature related. Today in Rochefort at 30+c the fan ran for a full minute after driving for about 5 minutes from an Aire to a supermarket. 30 minutes later when I started the engine the fan kicked in.

Similar scenarios but perhaps a different cause, hopefully a more mechanically proficient member will have an answer.

Thanks Davey. Don’t think it is temperature related. Have had the van since May and only started happening this weekend. I think I’ll get someone to have a look.

It does have air con Liam but it hasn’t been working since I got it. It sounds like a condenser fan so may be something gone awry with the air con electrics.

If your air con doesn't get used much the gas may have leaked out through dried seals, get it re gassed and that should solve air con not working, I'd say your fan problem is a faulty thermostat or bad connection to same

Modern vehicles are not like earlier vehicles!!! where they had a fan switch in the side of the rad they’re controlled through the ECU they use the engine temperature sensor which does both fan and engine management be careful the engine could be running LOSS get me home mode

Surely if that was the case, I would have a warning light on the dash? There has been no loss in power.

Yes your right!!! but not every fault will bring the warning light on some faults have to be flagged 30 or 40 times before it shows a fault the ECU diagnostic reader needed

Finally got around to getting this checked out. Looks like it is moisture in the fuse board that is causing a short and the fan to stay on permanently. 330 for a new board plus labour :-( Anyone know if this is a known issue?

Also found an oil leak and a coolant leak while looking over. Motorhome ownership is pricey business.

For a fraction of the price why not create a new circuit. Take a supply direct from the battery via a relay and power the relay by a feed from the temperature sensor on the rad (or where ever it is), If the temp sensor is buried in the ECU clip ONE OF THESE to the bottom hose of the rad.

Is that a domestic thermostat that is used in central heating? Wonder would it be up to splashes of water and dampness that it would be subjected in a vehicle

We should be able to sort that circuit easily enough. About half the cost of what youve been quoted. Based in Donegal, will take about 3 hours total time to repair.

Probably not, but there may be a version that is. My replay was more about the concept of a cheap alternative fix.

I know that, Colin. Definitely a good idea👍 don’t think of any reason why you couldn’t use the existing thermostat in the rad itself

I know in the old days there was a stat in the rad, just not sure if there still is, was thinking the control might now be done by an ECU.
