Trip to Ireland, ask for advices and hints

Good morning to everybody here.

First of all, I apologize for my poor English but I write from Italy where I live.
Not sure if this is the right section where to post my request.
If not, please move it to the right one.
I joned the forum just few days ago.
Let me first introduce myself.

Motorhomer since 1987, with my wife I visited almost all European Nations.
From the deep South (Sicily and Greece) to the Norvegian Finnmark.
Including almost all of former Eastern block Nations.

In 2012 we have already been to Ireland, in our itinerary we have always been close to the coast.
Sort of clockwise circumnavigation of the two Countries from Dublin to Dublin.
I mean the whole Island: the Republic and Northern Ireland.

I'd like to go back for about four to five weeks this summer.
Certainly we will retrace some stunning stretches already seen.
But we would also like to visit some places in the inland.
Do you have any suggestions ?

Thanks to everyone who wants to answer.

Max

p.s. I will be glad to share our travel experiences.
Feel free to get in touch with me if you need help.

Welcome, Massimo,
Firstly get a copy of the MororparkingIreland app for places to stopover. Then get a look at a map of Ireland for the Rivers, Shannon, The Barrow, The Blackwater and look at the Canal system. There are lots of Historical sites and towns along with the river and canal system and with the app, you will find places to stay along the way and all of them are running through the middle of the countryside.

Do a bit of planning and then come back with questions about your route and likely stopovers.

Thank you for your welcome and prompt reply.

I am still in the preliminary planning phase.
Some sites/towns along the Shannon River had already been included.
I took note of Barrow and Blackwater and (not known, thanks) the Canal system.
I will arrange some visits in those areas and will be back as soon as I have a rough plan in place.

Thanks again and regards,

Max

p.s. even if we often use stopovers, pubs or even wild camping, in the summertime we usually stay at campsites.
My usual sources of data are sites like campercontact or archiecampings (both Dutch sites).
BTW, I will check the suggested App.

Hi Massimo,

Bring the weather and the Vino as it is a lot more expensive here than in Italy. On a serious note include the Celtic valley of the chieftains, Brú Na Boinne older than the valley of the kings, and more impressive from an engineering point of view. It is just outside of Drogheda, which in its own right is a historic town and worth a visit.

All the best with your trip.

p.s.1: I will certainly bring some good wine.
Italian, not that nasty French one with more pretentious names than the flavor it has.
And I will be happy to share it with whom I will eventually meet.
p.s.2: In August 2012 the weather was not so bad, a few showers but nothing more.
Only in Tara Hill did we have a full day of rain. In fact, we didn't visit it.

If you are coming in summer you’ll be surprised how much busier Ireland is since 2012. The cliffs of Moher do not always allow motorhomes especially in July and August. If you do the ferry from Kerry to Clare again include a trip around Loop Head and the Bridges of Ross.

If you’re anywhere near Kilkee you ought to go to a great site in Doonbeg called Strandcamping (ahem.. that was the owner in previous post). Also, if exploring inland waterways I would recommend Lough Ree East campsite and Battlebridge campsite. And finally Kilaloe town itself for a visit if you are around Lough Derg, and Mountshannon as a great site to stay on Lough Derg.

If you don’t need or want a campsite then you can free park at Doonbeg pier or on the other side of the bay or at Loophead lighthouse itself, just try to include it in your tour if you have the time.

We already spent an afternoon at Loophead (see picture). I remeber it very well, some guys with huge telecopes doing wales watching from the top of the Cliff.
Of course we will return.
In the summertime we usually stay at campsites. We will probably get to your site and meet you.

If the weather is favourable take a look at County Fermanagh ( half of it is a lake!)
Stunning places to visit around the lake

Update

 ·
Posted: 20.05.2020  ·  #15
I didn't disappear after the first questions and answers.

Finally I have been able to develop version 1.1 of our possible journey.
Obviously covid and opening of borders and quarantines allowing.

I plan to cross by ferry from/to Holyhead.
So Dublin will be the starting point of the tour and also the last stop.

I am attaching it to you in the form of an excel sheet.
In line one some explanation.
In practice, although we will certainly not return to all the places visited on our 2012 trip, I have kept almost all of them and added new ones.
I ask for your opinion and I will welcome suggestions and changes.

I thank you in advance for your attention and courtesy.

I see you have been in Slane before, it is near Newgrange. Make sure you will visit both the Hill of Slane and if you have time do the tour of Slane Castle, it’s not huge compared to European castles, but the stories are very interesting and often you may see Lord Henry Mountcharles himself.

Camping on board on ferries (France to Ireland)

 ·
Posted: 13.06.2020  ·  #19
The itinerary is 99% ready.

Now it's about how to get to your island.
Last time I crossed from Holyhead to Dublin and I would have done this once again but now there is the covid with all its uncertainties related to possible quarantines imposed by the United Kingdom.

So I was thinking of crossing from France (Cherbourg, Roscoff or Brest), the harbour of arrival being irrelevant.
However, I can't understand if any of the ferry companies (Brittany, Irish, Stena) allows "camping on board" mode.
That is, travel on the open deck and possibility to sleep in the van.
The websites of the companies are not clear.

Can anyone help me ?

Thanks in advance and regards

Max

Unfortunately I do not think it is possible to overnight in your motorhome whilst travelling on any of the ships, due to health and safety reasons. But they all have cabins which are quite reasonably priced.

The simple answer to that is NO.
you have to book a cabin. I Dont think they will open the recliner seat option in the near future.
Ar this time they dont seem to be taking any type of passenger traffic from France to Ireland, only freight.

None of the ferry companies allow you to sleep in your motorhome, you usually have to book a cabin or recliner seat at time of booking. I'd resist, shout and throw a tantrum if they tried to put me on an open deck, it's bad enough on some enclosed decks with large open vents along the sides. Do you really want to spend your first day hand washing all the encrusted salt off your camper? In my opinion Stenna from Cherbourg to Rosslare Harbour is probably the best, smaller ship without the frills but more than adequate for the few hours you'll be onboard.

Thanks for advice.
In any case, I do not see a health or safety problem, it is a way of crossing used for years on ferries from Italy to Greece, overnight crossings that last more or less the same time.
The van is placed on a open deck (not necessarily the top one ) EHU for fridge is supplied.
Obviously the gas must be strictly switched off (e.g. no cooking, no gas fridge, no hot water).
You can use on board WC, showers, bars and and restaurants.

The health and safety issues are specific to individual ships many of which dont have outside deck parking and even those that do have no public access to vehicle decks at sea.
There is also the matter to proximity to muster stations for emergencies.

More than that, crossings between Ireland and France are exposed to much rougher weather than crossings on the adriatic. It's not a regular occurrence but bad weather can result in vehicles being shifted around the deck during the crossing and in extreme cases being damaged beyond repair.

I would suggest if you like your wine , bring plenty of it from home or stock up in WBS in Cherbourg as it is very expensive in this Country of ours. :(

If you have any left over we will invite you to a craic meet and help lighten your load going home 😁😂

First of all I would like to thank everyone who helped me.

Tomorrow I leave for the sea, destination that of Salento (Apulia, Italy). Not by motorhome, however.
I will spend three weeks with my granddaughters in the house that my daughter owns in the historic center of Gallipoli.
On my return I will think about the trip of this summer, we will see if it will be Ireland that left me with poignant memories.
I love your countries.

Thanks again,

Well, one more week and we'll head northwest, destination Ireland.
Approximately we should sail from Holyhead and arrive in Dublin around the 4th or 5th of August.
From there our plan is to head south/southwest first and then north calmly.

Max

p.s. Doonbeg is on the itinerary, nothing more likely to spend the night at Strandcamping site but we still don't know when we will be in the area.

I'm in Waterford, just outside the city. I'll be heading off to Italy on August 12th, but if you are down my way before that and need anything just let me know. Even if I'm away, I can probably sort you out with someplace to park for the night if you are stuck. Or even if you just need some information from a local, I can help there too.

Message me for my number if you want.

I see you are going to Graiguenamanagh and have no site located. This place is cheap and located in a beautiful spot right beside the river Graiguenamanagh Motorhome Site.
It's €11 per night, all the services and its located right on the river with lots of walks and water activities close by.

Also I see you are going to Bantry and Glengarrif. This place is in between the two of them and probably the nicest spot I've stayed in. Right down on the water, there are several spots to swim in the campsite. Again, close to lots of activities. I highly recommend a trip to Garnish Island. Very easy to arrange. Costs about 10 euro on a small boat you walk onto. Then 5 euro to access the island too. Lovely place, good way to spend a half day.Eagle Point Camping
It has everything you need and it's in a great location, beautiful scenery, but it's quite expensive. Around €35 a night I think.

Download the paid version of the Motorhome Parking Ireland app, it's only a few Euro.
With the paid version you will have access to a database of hundreds of places to stay plus up to date reviews.

Well, one more week and we'll head northwest, destination Ireland.
Approximately we should sail from Holyhead and arrive in Dublin around the 4th or 5th of August.
From there our plan is to head south/southwest first and then north calmly.

When you have a better idea of your plans check our availability on our website before you turn up. We are nearly always fully booked.

And if you come to the North West (Donegal) and need anything then get in touch. Some stunning destinations up this way.
Enjoy your trip, you've waited quite some time to come here.
Definately download www.motorhomeparkingireland.com as it has all you'll need for stops, excellent app.

@Waterford guy.
Thanks for tips and the offer of help.
If I need anything I will contact you.
Have a nice trip to Italy.

@baguette.
Motorhome Parking Ireland app installed.
My other sources of information had been Campercontact, Campingcar-infos, Archiecampings, Park4nights and although I don't know how reliable is, Safenightsireland.

@StrandCampingDoonbeg.
Of course I will.
Do you think there are problems even for just one night ?
A small corner for a six-meter van and a shower are enough for us, we don't need EHU.

@JJF.
Thanks for offering help.
If you look at the opening date of the post, the trip was already planned by 2020 then the pandemic exploded.
Northern Ireland readers will not forgive me but I honestly did not feel like traveling through the UK which was in quite bad shape and with a management that we thought ridiculous.
But we didn't stop, Germany up to Baltic Sea in 2020 and the third journey to Norway in 2021.

Surprised to see no recommendation regarding a visit to Skibbereen.....home of endless sunshine, smooth roads and good-looking women?

You only need MPI, its the only locally made app and used by all the locals. The others don't compare for Ireland in any way.
