Good time for a case for an Áire

Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company, in accordance with the Harbours Act 2015, was dissolved and responsibility transferred from the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council on the 3rd October 2018. The Council is currently at early stages of this transition process and are currently working on all operational and related matters

Full story here

Now is a good time for those with influence to make a case for a Cobh type Áire there. Great location, beside the Dart and pay parking already in place. Can't be that much work to put in a fresh water supply and grey / black waste facilities. The pier I'm thinking of doesn't have a lot of use.

It would be a great asset to the area.
Power...water.....waste 2 nights max would work as a transit stopover.
If Leitrim,Lough Ryn. can do it and make it pay...... why not ?

It cost Cobh about €5k to set up the parking including signs and services bay. This year (2018) they expect to take on about €20k in charges, it is agreed that the surplus will be put towards the developing local amenities in the locality.
A win, win, win for everyone.

Other Councils take note.

Is there any way to get that information in print .because other Councils might wake up if they were given the paper to prove that providing parking works.

To get the info first ask, then use FOI, but I'm sure they would give it. It's not often a council does anything that makes money.

There's power there and a pay and display machine. Water and waste are within a stones throw. The biggest construction cost would be the grey waste drop. That and a can of white paint.

In car this morning we went down to Dun Laoghaire harbour ...towards West pier, there is a parking area...as you turn left over little bridge over railway. There were 3 Irish motorhomes using 2 spaces lengthways. It costs €4 per day to park (x2 spaces).
Has anyone ever parked here?. Short walk to Dart, restaurants, and shopping.
Pity they wouldn’t put an Aire in all that space that Stena used to use before they moved to Dublin Port.

The area where I saw motorhomes yesterday is the one shown on #1,(and you can see MHs parked) but further along is the huge open space of ex Stena terminal, St. Michaels Pier, but I suppose there are development plans for there, even closer to Dun Laoghaire station, shopping etc.

I doubt we'll get a look in at the St Michael's Pier. I'm going to a business thing down there tomorrow so I'll snoop around and see if I can get any info.

The issue of paid parking there has to be reviewed soon if not already done. The parking enforcement in the harbour area is being done by the Harbour Police who work for the Port company which is now dissolved and enforcement may be "Ultra Vires"

I think the chances of getting the council in Dun Laoghaire to do anything to bring in the tourist business or do anything for small business is slim, The have driven the small people out with excessive rates and parking charges, how long has the public bath been left to go to rack and ruin while they did nothing while they twiddle their thumbs. why did they lose the ferry service?

I think you'd have to blame that on the Harbour Company.

All the Harbour company wants is Marinas if the council wanted the Ferry business they could have sorted out the road system to get the trucks into and out of the terminal.

The council did sort out a road network.
They spent billions on the Dublin Port tunnel.
Was it their fault that is was built on the wrong side of the liffey?

It’s great to see events being offered by the water, always a huge draw, and in such a heavily populated area it should be a hit. Hopefully it will be well policed by security, there is enough tragedy in the water, down this neck of the woods, anyway. The best of luck to them.,,,, but we will be at Vantastival

All this talk about Dun Laoghaire Harbour as a possible stopover , yet I see no POI added on the app. Just wondering, is it still a suitable stopover? We looking for somewhere to park for a couple of nights soon, with access in and out of Dublin.

Hi, new to the forum.
We recently stayed in Dun Laoghaire for a Dublin City concert. We parked at the old ferry terminal which, if you looked at the sea from the town, would be to the very right. €5 for 24hrs. Although we were a bit stuck out, I enquired the following morning was it an issue and was told not at all. Mostly quiet, though it did start filling up the second morning.
Ticketed the van, and noticed the harbour police having a good long look at us. Though I suspect they were more concerned about the possibility we were of a certain type.
€3 into Dublin on the dart!
A few places still open in the town for food and drink.

STOPOVER at DUN LAOGHAIRE HARBOUR

 ·

Hi, New to the forum . Sorry for language hasards

We're planning a motorhome trip all over Ireland, 4 weeks in May.
( My last tour was 10 years ago, by car + tent: wet and windy... ).
W'll try to do wild camping as much as possible, and we altogether expect meeting local people.
Our first visit , as soon as we leave the ferry , would be to Dublin for a couple of days , before heading to the west.
But we realise that finding a suitable place to stay overnight with our motorhome looks to be difficult, all over the island, and particularly around DUBLIN, and large towns.
I've read through this superb motorhomecraic site where we find lots of useful informations: many thanks to all members.
Would anyone confirm my reading that staying overnight at " Old Harbour " is allowed, suitable, safe , and now rated 5€ par day ? ( I believe this is the north/western part of the Harbour ? )
Would there be any other quiet places to be recommended ?
Many thanks for yout help !
Kind regards
Daniel

We have stayed here in the past. Think it was called the Coal Pier. Larger vans can be reserved over the waters edge. There is a Dart (railway) station close by and Dunlaoghaire town is a short walk. It was €5 for 24 hrs.

Sorry,a bit late after the post, you can just about make out the van to the right of the red and white hulled boat.

That is down beside the Royal St George Yacht club opposite the new Library and Royal Marine ( 53.294162, -6.131625 ) That's a great spot and very central.
