Hi all, i am going to look at a 1998 Renault Trafic 1.9 diesel camper that has come up for sale near me.
I would like to ask the opinion of the more experienced here as to what they are like, what i should look for when viewing
and their general reliability good or bad. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated by me.

Cheers
John

I don't know much about them but I'd say rust could be a problem

Sound, thanks for that, i'll have a look anyway at it and see what it is like. If it was at the right money it might be worth a punt.

Sorry don’t know much about Leisuredrive. I think they were converters?

I had a Leisuredrive on a high top T25 Volkswagen way back. It was a fairly good conversion

Leisuredrive are/were a UK converter if I remember correctly. They have done a lot of VW's over the years. Regarding the Trafic, my brother had one as a company van and it seemed to have had its share of issues, the gearbox being one.

Well i went and looked at this today and as Eirebus mentioned about rust, bygod was there rust and plenty of it. It had been undersealed at some point onto the rust. She would have needed a pile of work to pass a test so i left it . Also the driving position is odd to say the least. Your sitting straight in the seat in front of the steering wheel and your legs must go over about 6 inches the left to get at the pedals, much like an old Fiat 127 i drove years ago. Could have been a nice enough van in the day but now id say there is better.
While im on the subject, i have a 2003 Toyota Hiace panel van here at home currently signed off the road.
What are the merits of converting that van into a camper or is it worth the hassle? I would appreciate advice from the more experienced among the members, the real cost of getting certification for gas and electric and general things needed to convert a panel van. I am quite capable of doing the work myself as i am a self employed carpenter , stair maker , and all that type of work. The doing of it is not a problem, it is the what to do and best way to do it legally so as to be able to reclass it as a camper and be safe to use on the road. All advice greatfully recieved.

John.

Hi John,

I can't see it being too much of a drama once the criteria for campervan conversion is met. Once that is done, you need to get an SQI to sign it off, which is an engineer's report. This should cover the gas installation too, I think. I had it all done with a VW Transporter several years back. Once all that is sorted then it is just a matter of the logbook being changed over to "motor caravan".

I'll contact a SQI and see what they say. Seeing how as i have the van i will try and see what i need to do, it is a standard height roof.

The Roof height might be a problem, check it out before committing

The roof height of 1.8 metres is not a campervan requirement as regards getting the vehicle classified as a campervan on the logbook. However, most insurance companies do look for it with the exception of the caravan club - they do not require it. I believe they can also supply an SQI. A pop up roof is another way around the height thing for insurance purposes but they are expensive for decent ones.

That would seem like the best route to go down before committing. Thank you for that bit of advice. It is invaluable the information on this site. Brilliant.
