Attempted Break in

 ·
Posted: 11.09.2019  ·  #1
Went to do a big shop in Caraffour in Antibes Monday morning about 10.30. Parked up in very busy car park . Came out about an hour later. Opened the van with remote and noticed that the alarm had activated when we were away . Checked around and noticed half of my side bedroom window missing. Also noticed later that the had drilled just under the handle on the drivers door. Luckily we had the alarm fitted 3 days before we left home on the trip. There was nothing taken just the damage. Thought we would be safe at that time in a busy car park. Still over 4 weeks left till we go home. Spoke to James in Anchorpoint who sent me details of local Burstner dealers with part numbers and prices for guidance. Staying in a fabulous site in St Aygulf (17 euro Acsi) waiting on the replacement window to arrive.C'est la vie .

Oh no,not good at all, make sure you check you still have your passports spare keys, house keys etc, similar thing happened to us five or six years ago, they took the window with them also, along with a tee shirt and a sum of money and our E111 health cards.Don't let it spoil the rest of your holiday .I wonder why the hole was drilled in the door?

Just wondering, is it mainly newer, shiny, expensive looking vans that are being targeted, or is it across the board.

Wondering myself....Never had an issue with our 1999 Adria. I think having alert barking dogs helps too...

Our 2004 Chausson was also broken into in France about six years ago, never had a problem in Ireland, I think theft in France is much more prevalent than they are letting on. tbh I never had the same mass on the place since. We toured west Cork this year and had the best Holiday in years, People are on about the cost of Holidaying in Ireland, That's Bull, we had the cheapest and best holiday in years thanks to the app.

Really shocking, you would think some locals would be suspicious of an attempt to break in through a window or drill out a door lock. Maybe it is more common than we think.

Really sorry to hear about this and hopefully you got sorted and the rest of your holiday goes well. Unfortunately there are low life's everywhere..here at home and abroad. Fortunately it seems, going by the small number of forum reported incidents, considering the amount of motorhomes traveling each year in France this type of incident is not that prevalent. This obviously won't make anyone feel better when it has happened to them. I have to say it won't put me off going to France.

Had to cut our holiday short. The son rang me last night to tell me our house had been broken into as well. No real damage but he is not sure what has been taken. They pulled the alarm panel of the wall. Just travelling up through France for the ferry on Sunday. Maybe that's all our bad luck at once.

Bad news Leo, stay calm and assess the situation when home.... there won’t be a lot you can do and hopefully your home is now secured and you can sort all out when back.
I really am gutted for you and your family, all the very best getting things sorted out.

Thanks for all the kind words. The good thing about coming home early is that we may be able to go to some of the planned meets

That’s too much of a coincidence. Could they have gotten your address from the van. I have a letter lying from MHCC that had my membership card in it. It will be burn tomorrow. Makes you think!

I was just about to write the same thing, I tend to have a very suspicious mind when two things like that happen together. Hope there's not too much damage and you can put it behind you.

Very unfortunate alright, but hardly think these thieves then travelled to Ireland from France to rob his house?

Not them in person but like the so-called country cousins they could have a good intelligence network and all it takes is a phone call.

Yes, but been i France in your motorhome don’t mean your house is Unoccupied. What people put up on social media I would think is a bigger threat. I’m not saying that is the case here as I don’t know what the facts are

I thought it was only an attempted break in. Therefore they would have got no information on their home address

A lot of conspiracy theories here. Don't think they gained access to the MH. We are close to Cherbourg for the night catching the ferry tomorrow. Have stocked up with wine and goodies. Will enjoy them over the coming months when we settle back in at home. Thank again for all the good wishes.

Agree 100%. I did write as much. Then I couldn’t see what I had posted, so had a few conspiracy theories of my own, then... allowed.......i most likely just didn’t press submit

While repairing the hole in the door found that the lock would not work with the keys manually. Ok on fob central locking. The back of the barrell is damage. Anyone know where I can pickup a second hand one. I can get it rebuilt to my key
