We traveled from Caen to Portsmouth this morning. I was asked to hand over our dog's muzzle for inspection at the check-in. Once inside the compound, the Gendarme searched inside the van, in the toilet, shower, cupboards and drawers, as well as the garage from both sides. I've traveling this route for 15 years with a dog, this is the first time this has happened. Maybe they are really tightening things up.

It could have been the sticker , or the shifty look of me. Surprisingly , the boat was almost empty, we were the only motorhome. The Gendarme did give all the lorries a good look over as well.

I'd say it was the awful events of last week that has led to a more thorough scrutiny of trucks/vans/motorhomes etc.

I have never had a good check at the ports. A couple of times they have looked in the toilet but never checked the overcab, garage or double floor. I can see this tightening up in the future

Last year we had to put the whole camper through the scanner in Cherbourg, it’s a massive unit that scans trucks caravans and campers as well as vans. Everyone got out and it rolls down the line scanning right through the vehicles.

Great, now we will be searched every time we travel. Is that why immigration officers were stopping all Motorhomes in Dublin Port when we returned from France in September.

Our van was searched even the cup cupboard and the glove box, on the Calais/Dover route by both the French side and then the UK side in July 17. So its not just now there are doing it.

Could be :-/ .but considering I was 1700km away between Lugo and Melide walking the Camino Primitivo at the time and our Ben was driving, I know he looks like a younger me, but that's pushing it. :D ;-)

That’s the first thing that came to my mind.

I have to say though, we’ve only taken the ferry to France on two occasions so far. Both times I was amazed at the ease at which one could transport stowaways. I wonder if when all passengers have embarked and left the car decks to check in to their cabins, do they do a security sweep? Dogs, infrared etc.? I doubt it.
