I tried starting the van this morning but it just turned over weakly, meter reading 12.8 v across terminals, cables at starter motor look OK? I've no idea how old the battery is I have the van over 3 yrs any ideas or do I just replace the battery
I put the van on ehu for about 5 minutes and it started while still connected to ehu

Dave, as you know I know nothing about engines but I do know the battery should hold its voltage during cranking. Can you keep the voltmeter on the terminals and monitor while trying to turn it over? You would expect the voltage not to dip to severely.

What voltage are your leisure batteries at? Are they definitely isolated from one another?

I'd leave the MH on charge for 48 hours.
It'll probably give you trouble again once the cold weather comes in though!

Fiats are also renowned for having bad earths which deteriorate overtime, so get the battery tested before buying anything.
