Look's like there may yet be another route for us to travel to Spain from 2020, Gnv ferries are reported to be introducing the new service form Cork to Vigo next year. here's a link for anyone interested. www.corkbeo.ie/news/local-news…d-17013263

Be very handy for a Portuguese trip, just north of the border.
Good news, bit of competition on the route.

Interesting, and most definitely related to current events. There might be some advantages to Brexit after all.

Great news....Nice to see another Ferry Company on the Spanish route. This should ensure Brittany Ferries get their reliability problems sorted..

It looks promising from a competition perspective and also from a potential tourist prospective, I'm certainly excited about the prospect.

I'm left wondering however about the freight aspect which will ultimately make or break this service. Is there enough trade to sustain this route which is really limited to trade between Ireland and Spain/Portugal as Vigo just doesn't make sense as an access point to continental Europe from Ireland, hell it's not even great for the eastern half of Spain but I suppose there's a lot of agricultural produce from Galicia that has the potential to substitute produce currently being shipped through the UK.

I thought exactly the same Bryan. Vigo is really far away from the rest of Europe, it’s even far from the Med coast of Spain ! ... but they’ve obviously done the analysis of the route. Will there be enough freight business between western Spain & Portugal with Ireland coupled to the tourist traffic?.... probably yes, it may be more appealing for Irish freight when the UK leaves Europe as it won’t have a customs border infrastructure to navigate and therefore may be a faster route into that area and indeed mainland Europe as a whole.
Interesting times.

A second direct Ireland-Spain route has to have some impact. They may not go cut throat on prices but may look for other advantages perhaps in scheduling or the level of service / standard of vessel they're using.

A reliable ship would be a great advantage

That's all we ask for Dave....A reliable ship that keeps to a timetable. The amount of people with limited holiday time that have been kicked in the teeth by Brittany Ferries isnt even funny.

Castletownbere is the largest fishing port in the country by a margin, many vessels flying the Spanish flag land there and the fish is trucked to Spain, Vigo is a huge fishing port and quite a long way from Santander 575km of poor enough roads for HGV’s.
I would think that the freight aspect has been examined closely for these reasons like processors having access to raw materials more easily.
Maybe their could also be an element of EU funding coming down the line to help mitigate the effects of Brexit as well.
It’s definitely an interesting service for sure and Grimaldi already run out of Cork
