Anyone upped the weight of their van in NI? What process did you use? what company? what cost?

DIY or company?

:D

I got the weight of mine upped when I bought it by the dealer and it was very straight forward.

I am interested in this topic too after standing "on the scales" at the Stena check-in at Cairnryan and enquiring as to the overall weight - I was heavier than I thought but not over weight (plated at 3500kg but would pay less road tax and carry more bottles back from France if up plated to 3650kg)!

Looking on other forums, JR Consulting in Suffolk, email address truckcon@outlook.com is cheaper than SV Tech (£150 to get the paperwork sent to DVLA). I have not used this company so can't comment on how good they are.

Great info.

I remember seeing a form where it was possible to do it yourself.

Mine was upgraded to 3850 and it was Rodbridge Caravans but they are no longer. It’s didn't seem to be difficult I just had to sign a form and they did the rest.

Lads don’t forget that if you up plate, you now have to stick to hgv speed limits, which may be an issue on long journeys

You can do it yourself for a £15 fee.
Download and print this form https://assets.publishing.serv…ations.pdf

Need the following
1. Photo of existing VIN plate;
2. Photo of Motorhome manufacturer plate;
3. Photocopy of Certificate of conformity - Fiat;
4. Photocopy of Certificate of conformity - Motorhome Manufacturer;
5. Photo of Vehicle taken from outside (showing existing registration number);
6. Cheque payment - £15.00 !

Send all to:
Sent it off to VOSA / DVSA - at Padley road, Swansea

You should receive back a weight design cert within 14 days showing new weight.

You will need this form for road fund licence. See https://assets.publishing.serv…le-hgv.pdf

Fill out the V5 with change of vehicle details and enclose pics as above along with a comprehensive explanation of new figures to be amended and copy of the new weight design cert. send it to the DVLA in Swansea.

Order new vin plate with new details, lots of companies do those....... you will need to prove what it’s for but with all the paperwork that’s not an issue. Add the new vin plates when you receive. Alternatively you can have simple weight plates stamped and add over the existing weights on the original vin plate.

You should receive the V5 within 10 days.

Sounds complicated but in reality it’s not difficult. I have in the past up-plated a DAF 55 lorry from a box body to a tilt and slide for 2 cars plus a hydraulic spectacle lift at the rear and had to up-plate the weights as above. It all went through pretty easy but we were an approved repairer/workshop back then.

I’m not so sure about that. Perhaps it’s called something else, but it is my understanding, and from what I have read here previously, that vehicles over 3500 kg have a lower speed limit

In the UK, any vehicle over 3050 is restricted in speed. 3050 is the unladen weight, which makes damn all sense but thats the rules.

Update to my previous comment. As far as I can ascertain, in ROI there seems to be some confusion, in France there definitely seems to be different limits over 3500kg, I think a lot of Europe is the same, but I’m not sure. In U.K. it’s as Ally has said. As usual, down South, it seems as if it’s unclear.

David Your correct ,
The insurance info is out of date and basically incorrect. we do not have special motorhome speed limits it is by weight alone.
another one people who drive with yellow plates don't seen to know is towing Caravans
Towing Vehicles - 80 km/h

Trucks (with a design gross weight of more than 3,500kg)
- Motorways - 90 km/h (since 1 April 2012)
- Other roads - 80 km/h
copy of page 115. RSA rules of trhe road

There was a member from west Cork that got speeding penalty points going to the first southern Mhc meet in Kilkenny driving a large American RV and he appealed and the points were lifted.

I think the U.K. is pretty clear Tommy, it’s our shower down South, that seem to be at crossed purposes. Nothing new there 🤬
