Gas Cylinder and VRT appointment - help!

 ·

Hello all,

Have joined as a new owner of a VW T4 conversion which I've just imported from the UK. Currently navigating the VRT minefield. I had an RGI over to install a gas cylinder last week. After his third (!) visit I'm left with a cylinder that's hooked up but not properly secured. Have VRT appointment on Wednesday and just don't think I'll have time to sort it before then. Would I be better off taking it out and sorting later? I can't see any mention of a gas cylinder at all on the Revenue requirements but my SQI said it was one? Waiting for a call back from Revenue but thought I'd check here while I wait.

I'll be so glad when all of the paperwork is done, the volume is insane!

Thanks in advance.

It's a VRT check not a mechanical /safety check so I would leave it in the van, but that's my opinion

My understanding is that if you are not converting the vehicle, and therefore the UK logbook declares a Campervan, then you would not be subject to any conversion or SQI checks. You just bring it to your NCTS centre. They’ll photograph it and send the pics off to Rosslare where it is valued.

Whatever insurance company you go with might insist on the gas cylinder being strapped. Dolmen for example require double straps. So I think for your VRT check you would be fine leaving the gas in place.

Thanks both for taking the time to reply. Strangely, Dolmen were happy to insure without the gas as my policy began before I had the gas installed. I thought the SQI would be the one to check it as he was doing the other safety checks like seatbelts etc., but he says it doesn't come under their remit.

It's not a campervan on the UK logbook, it's a very recent conversion, I'll be registering it as a camper here.

Well if you’re converting it ignore what I just said. That would explain why you got the SQI involved then.

I just had a look on their website camper checklist. I think it only applies to converted vans actually. It states:

IF YOUR CAMPERVAN IS CONVERTED – THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL ITEMS ARE REQUIRED
If your vehicle is converted or modified you must submit an Engineers Report Form completed by a main dealer or SIMI garage. If the vehicle is under 15 years old then a DOE would be acceptable.
The following photographs must be provided:
Front, rear and each side of the outside of the campervan, interior and
gas bottle with 2 straps fixed around it. The interior photographs should include clear photographs of the sink and cooker and the clear walkway from the front cab to the back of the vehicle.
All photographs must be clear and in colour.

Yep, it was listed as a requirement by Dolmen but for some reason they were willing to overlook it - although I do only have a month's temporary cover until I get the Irish reg so that may be why. The good news is I heard back from Revenue and it's not something they check for so I'm grand. Although will of course secure it asap.

Thanks again all, no doubt I'll be back with more questions!

I've never seen a factory built motorhome of any type with two straps. 🤔
Isn't the locked gas locker the principal means of keeping the bottles from falling out when on the move.

That must be how Dolmen look at it too, if they do not insist on the two straps on factory builds.

I'll send you a copy of the email. And the photos showing a single strap and a collar holding down strap.
That they would not accepted.
