I'l be honest, I am somewhat shocked at the Fuel Consumption we are getting on our recent aquisition.
On our 2007 Rear wheel drive 2.4 Transit the average is 24mpg or 8.5 kilometres per litre.
Is the high,or normal?
Anyone else done an accurate average?

You are right on the money as far as our 2.8 jtd ducato goes. Whether at 110 Km’s per hour on French motorways or skipping around Ireland, that’s pretty much what we get, and most of my mates, That have them say the same. I suppose someone with a new, all singing, all dancing van may get more, but, I had a lad telling me, he was getting 32 from an 07, I just smiled

From what I hear from others the norm for a coach built is somewhere between 20mpg and 30mpg dependant on the size, shape. weight, speed you travel at etc. Anything above 25mpg I consider good.

Our 2014 X250 130hp Ducato low profile coach built at 3850kg fully loaded can achieve 30mpg according to the on board computer when pottering around Ireland at under 50mph indicated. On our European trips we average around 27mpg calculated on tank topped before and after trip. That is typically over 3000 Miles with a typical indicated speed of 60mph where legal. I generally have a light right foot.

My 2016 A class 2.3 Fiat running at around 3650kg has, over 30,000 miles averaged 28 mpg. I keep a diary of places visited and part of this is a log of fuel fills. This is almost exclusively on basic B7 supermarket diesel, but that’s a different topic.

On a long trip on the continent on mostly motorway driving at around 90kph we averaged just over 26mpg, pottering about around Ireland maybe 22mpg........ the shape of the wagons we drive leaves them about as aerodynamic as a barn door!

Indeed I blame the aerodynamics rather than my right foot.

Transits and fuel economy don't belong in the same sentence.
As jjf pointed out, most campervans are not aerodynamic.
Based on our transit, anything near the mid 20 miles per gallon is normal.

That's great MPG for a RWD transit! Is it low profile?

I always averaged at 24.8. I changed the fuel filter which I realised was leaking.

I now get 26mpg average, but I lowered my top speed on dual carriageways and motorways so I would say it was that rather than anything to do with the filter.

He was getting 18-19mpg.

My A Class with a 2.8 JTD Power engine normally does 24/25 mpg.
Really tootling along at 70-80 km/p/h I'll get a bit better but hammering along a motorway at 110 km/p/h into a headwind can result in 20-21 mpg.
Strangely when driving at sightseeing speeds (50-60 km/p/h) over mountain passes I have got nearer to 30 mpg, which goes to show it's pushing the damn thing through the air at speed is what consumes the most fuel which is understandable because it has the aerodynamics of a brick o.O
GVW is usually in the region of 3,850 kg.

I get 20 to 24 mpg depending on how heavy the right foot is.

3.0 renault master dci140 knaus with an overcab luton. 3850kg
First 20k miles was less mpg. 18 to 21.

If I tootle around at 50 to 55 mph I get 24 but anything faster and it drops quickly. I must say it can fairly move if you're in a hurry though!

VW T5 1.9 TDI (low roof)

80 litres = 710 miles (on a run) = 8 .87 miles per litre = 40.35 mpg.

Pat, if I remember correctly, you telling me you had a six speed box, and that at 110 km/h you were at a little over 2000 revs. My 5 speed ducato sits just under 3000revs at 110 km/h.
That might explain the huge difference

Motorhomes and high mpg are not something that are to be used in the same sentence.
I presently run a 2.3 fiat ducato 180hp tag axle and get between 22 and 24 mpg.
I accept that as being as good as it gets.

I stepped up from an 1800 Goldwing which averaged 36mpg and a bed for the night in Europe could have been anything up to €100. Now I don’t bother with mpg as my bed/kitchen/bar is behind me so I’m quids in for free!

Our Sprinter 313cdi 2.2 will do up to 29mpg if I keep the revs between 2 and 2.1/2 k ( 50 to 60 mph= 80 to 100 Kph ) above 3000 rpm a mysterious hole appears in the tank,

I had a 5.7 v8 and was only getting between 6 and 11 for the first 3 years. Then I discovered that there was a separate ehu for the disabled control used by the previous owner. After it was removed I got 20+. Sure you're never going that far away so why worry

There is a second side to this discussion.
If one was running a commercial van within a commercial business, we would be seriously looking at the drivers habits.
At what revs do they change gear?
Looking at the rev tacho on the dash, the lower segments in the green zone for shifting gear are more fuel efficient.
However, the weight of the van is the elephant in the room.
An empty transit commercial van is probably 1500 or 1600 kgs.
Being a empty mh it probably about a 1000/1250 kg heavier before we put ourselves and our stuff into it.
All of a sudden with the mh , yourselves, your stuff, and a family of bikes on the rear carrier you could be hitting towards the 4000 kg mark.
This will drink diesel.
My advice would be load up the mh as you have being doing and get it weighed on any farmers co-op weightbridge.
If you are over weight, you need to shed stuff that is on board.
In simple terms, less weight going down the road equals less diesel burnt.

I haven't reset the mileage trip recorder in over 2000 miles so it should be near average. 28.2 mpg
2.2 ltr Peugeot engine in a 2017 Bailey 745.
