Hi,
Im researching buying a mid to late 90’s small campervan in the uk. Would be either a Mazda bongo, Toyota hiace or hiace regius. As I need automatic, i’m only looking at japanese imports. Have been trying to find some guidance on vrt online and pretty much hitting my head against a bring wall. Have read its about 13% of whatever imaginary number the revenue calls a valuation but also read somewhere its 30% on campervans with a pop up roof. This really knocked the wind out of my sails!! Would be great to hear from those in the know as I’ll definitely be looking at a pop up roof. Many thanks,
in advance

It is essential that you get the UK Registration Certificate, the UK 'V5', when you are buying your vehicle

Never heard of 30% mentioned. there is a very good blog on Donedeal.
All you need to know about camper vans and VRT.

Another VRT related question,

Has anybody VRT'd a motorhome recently?
If so what did you VRT and what did it cost you?

Im considering a MH on UK plates but im a bit hesitant as its all hokus pokus with the VRT system,

Thanks

I had my VRT assessment yesterday, so waiting to hear what fantasy figure they're going to hit me with! I've never heard of the 30% figure either, just the 13.5%. It's a 2001 VW T4, newly converted to a camper, pop-top roof. Brought in from Dorset. I'll keep you posted!

PS: The paperwork is a nightmare and they asked me for things that weren't on their list of requirements but I happened to have because I'd read forums such as this one. If you do go ahead with it I'll give you any advice I can, while it's still raw :)

It really sounds difficult for the people who are trying to get on and enjoy life, this is a group who are probably spending savings that has been hard earned.
Governments are well known for taking off the people who are trying to better themselves while giving lots to those that are willing to sponge their way through life.

Exactly, and they are the same people that begrudge you earning a few quid, as if they forgot that we need to earn. Suppose you would if you get handed it.

Just to add to this,

Spoken to a lad over the weekend that imported a 97 transit herald, VRT €2000, (imported may 2019)

A friend inmpoted a 2011 Adria something or other 4 berth vrt €6950 (imported April 2017)

Glad I asked the VRT question as I didnt realise it was as steep, and was considering importing a MH as all that seems to be offered for sale here is UN cared for mh's that are as rough as a bears a**e but in "perfect condition" when advertised,😡

Surely that is daylight robbery, but I suppose while they get away with it they will continue to implement it.

I paid 1800e last may I did consider an appeal but after a bit of research came to the conclusion it was probably based on the value here,so I didn't bother, also remember you can claim any time remaining on the vechicle test and exchange for a current cvrt cert. that figure was on a 1999 auto windfall on a Peugeot boxer base. (avantgarde 200)

Update: Got my figure from VRT this morning and it's actually less than I expected! €1775. Still stings but I thought it could be anything up to €3k. It's not even 13.5% of what I paid for the van.

I definitely don't feel like I was overcharged for the van itself as it's a top-class conversion.

2001 VW T4, newly converted, low mileage (40k).
