Crikey Robert, not much wiring on a grey diesel.
You wiring up a dynamo to the voltage regulator by any chance ?

They’re all TVO/petrol models Ally, the diesel has even less wiring.
Early ones had the starter switch on the gear selector.

Mine has a solenoid and starts when you punch the brass button on the side and push the gear lever forward

Yes, weren’t they just something else. Still one at my home place that was bought before I was born.

No wiring loom on it so a small tow starts her but now the flock have flown the nest it’s hard to get someone to tow me so have bought a new loom for it but they come with no instructions have worked out a few wires but can’t seem to get starter to engage

Robert is that the correct way? so if someone hit the starter wouldn't the tractor drive away?
I always taught it was the other way it had to be out of gear to allow power to go to the solenoid to start.

Have a few photos like I said you need to hold the brass button on the side which allows you to puts the gearstick forward which makes contact with the starter motor starting the tractor but Somthing not right 🤔

The Lucas solenoid switch is not required. Someone added that.
The solenoid on the starter is full manual that activates when gearstick is put in the “s” position. It’s still has the Lucas dynamo so you’ll need to add a mechanical voltage regulator to get it sorted.
If you got a new loom then tear out the old one and install the new one.
At one end of the loom there will be two wires, one large spade and one small spade, they fit on the dynamo , there will be a part of the loom at the other side with 5 wires, 2 big spades and 3 mall spades, they are for the voltage regulator that sites below the dash where the throttle handle sits, some of the later greys had an ammeter and if that loom is that way it will have 2 more wires with ring connectors for the ammeter. The greys didn’t have an ignition switch as the dynamo/regulator opened when it stopped which stopping it discharging when not running.
Proper old school foolproof basic wiring.

Am I right in thinking that you have to press in the brass button in order to shove the gear lever forward, to engage the starter/solenoid?
If that is done and nothing happens then if he presses the black button in the center of the Lucas solenoid ( photo 3 ) it should spin the starter
Like we used to do when working under the bonnet to spin an engine over

Or put a spanner between the solenoid contacts, I've started many a clasic car like that, scary when you first do it!

The old ones had a rubber button, if it is a new type then that would be the way, making sure you did it across the nuts and not the thread

Yes, you must have the gear lever in the ‘S’ position as you are physically pushing the starter motor bendix gear into the flywheel ring gear as well as making the electric circuit. A fully manual system other than the electric motor of the starter....

Or you can get one of these ! .. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fer…SwfJ5dRciB

Early ones were positive earth, later ones were negative earth. Very early ones were 6 volt, but I think only TVO models.

Use a set of jump leads and power up the starter motor while holding the gear selector in S, if the starter spins correctly and the engine cranks when positive is on the starter motor then it is negative earth, if the starter motor spins but the bendix is chucked from the flywheel and it doesn’t crank then its positive earth.
Diagram below assumes there is an amp clock, if not then join those wires together and insulate. Also that is the basic circuit assuming no lights, etc fitted. There is no ignition switch.

Robert, that starter motor doesn’t require a standalone solenoid switch unless someone has messed up the mechanical contacts on top of the starter motor where the lever goes in. When you put the gearstick into ‘s’ you've Pushed the bendix into the ring gear and bridged the contacts within providing voltage to the starter motor.
The only reason a standalone solenoid would be there is if someone has bypassed the copper contacts in the mechanical Solenoid on the starter...... not easy to do in that particular starter motor.

There was once a man who had an obsession for tractors. His walls were covered in posters of tractors, his mantelpiece covered in tractor plates. Tractors tractors tractors all over his house. His wife, naturally, because she was sane, hated it. So she gave him the ultimatum - the tractors or her. After much thought he decided to get rid of the tractors and promptly took all of the memorabilia to the dump. He returned home to find his house on fire and that the smoke was preventing his wife and kids from finding the door. So the man took a massive deep breath. He sucked in with all his might. The smoke sucked out of the house and his family escaped. Later on, a firefighter asked him how he did it. "That's easy," he replied. "I'm an extractor fan".

A blast from the past Robert, A neighbor had a 20 tvo and he used give my father a hand drawing in silage with it, no pick up hitch in those days, you had to use a screw jack on the drawbar of the trailer to change trailers in the field every time a load was full. I was probably 9 or 10 at the time and my job was waiting in the yard with a bucket of water for the tractor every time it came in. The radiator was plastered with isopon and there was a big gash in one of the front wheels and a gaiter on the inside bolted on by Six gutter boltst. God they were tough times but people didn’t know any better and were happy out.

As I said this tractor sat for years in an outhouse with water running through the tin towed it 20 yards and it started the derv was still the stuff in her from when she was put in when I drained the oil it came out in lumps like thick gunge they don’t make tractors like that anymore 🚜
