Shouldn’t need to drop the tank at all. Access hatch under passengers feet that screws out and direct access from there.
Didn’t even know the 96 had a pump in the tank, thought that was from 2000 onwards.

An access panel would be very
handy
We are not there ,so I can't check
So the fuel pump may be outside the tank
Possibility it's electrical problem

My 2001 has an electrc pump in the tank, (2.8 jtd)
And as John says access hatch on floor just infront of the left hand seat (Driver seat in my LHD)

How have you diagnosed the Pump failure Terry if you don't mind me asking?

Have you checked the fuel filter as if it has not been changed for a long time it can block up.

She's turning over but not starting
Breakdown mechanic found no fuel coming through
Possibly

Fuel pump banjoed

Electrical fault / relay

Is there power to the solenoid on the injector pump?
If you drove it there and it was going OK then it’s unlikely to be the injector pump, but those little solenoids stick shut sometimes or electrically fail.

This is what is shown for your year.

Is this not the pump fitted to you're enging .
Did the breakdown guy say it was electric .
Where did he take the pipe off when he said you were not getting fuel.

Not sure but usually heigh up on the block or the side of the head .follow the lined from the fuel filter you will find a mechanical pump if one is fitted.
But sucking the fuel trough the filter will not necessarily tell you that the pump is not working. it may tell you that the pickup pipe in the tank is blocked.
Needs more looking at.

I would be inclined to pull the lifter pipe out of the tank.
In most cases there is a plastic filter gauge fitted onto the end of the lifter pipe which over time is prone to block with sludge.
A shot of compressed air will clean the gauge.

Just my thoughts.

Well worth a look at Thorn,I had a Merc 307 that would go well on level ground but would break your heart when you started climbing hills, tried all things as it was fairly new but no luck until I took out the fuel assembly from the tank and there was a lump of cloth waste, like you used to get in factories, which when you were level running allowed the fuel to flow but condensed when you wanted more fuel to climb thus cutting down the flow.

Good stuff.
Common problem with those.
Glad you’re sorted.
