Cobh to Ringaskiddy route(S)

 ·
Posted: 14.08.2018  ·  #1
I’m planning to stay at the site in Cobh the night before our crossing to Spain from ringaskiddy but I just checked the route and one was 11km and 40 minutes which is cycling pace the other 3 times as long distance wise but a quicker drive.
I have a medium size van 7.4m long could I do either route? Why is the short distance so long in time?

12km is the shorter cross-river-ferry route (yellow). but there could be a waiting time.

Which is ok, but the road between the cross-river-ferry and Ringaskiddy terminal (via Monkstown) has a tight skew bridge, and overhanging trees... Not bad, I've seen plenty of HGV's on that road. If you're a confident driver, you'd be fine.

The longer route (blue) would be more popular with bigger vehicles. Even though it's 34km, the time takes to get from A-B is the same according to google maps (and I'd tend to agree).

I think the ferry is €12 one way for campers so it might be cheaper (in diesel) to take the longer route.

Aye, good choice.

If you're travelling Mon-Fri, you'll hit traffic on the tunnel & south link (in red) so give yourself some extra time for that. It's busy from 8-10am.

Weekends are grand.

You could overnight in Crosshaven, only 20 mins to Ringaskiddy and free.

Thanks what is Crosshaven? I’m after somewhere quiet and safe. Don’t need any services.
I dare say there is a review in the app but this will be for night only.
Thanks for the advice

Is crosshaven classed as the hill by the gaa pitch?
Just been reading about boy racers on a review and another (French) who left as they didn’t feel safe.

Crosshaven is on the S/W side of Cork Harbour. A small village with a big boating population.

Quiet at night. Park along the fence of the boatyard, a 3 minute stroll to shops, pubs and food.

The car park beside the GAA club is at Camden Fort, above the town. Great views of Cork Harbour from there but where I'm suggesting is at the village

Carrigaline is another option and even closer to Ringaskiddy, while no official aires you'll be able to park without any issues either on Aldi or right across it where there's a small parking. Quiet town with plenty of pubs and chippers.

Definitely take the long route, just avoid peak hours as the lads said.

Yeah, I was going to suggest Crosshaven also if you've already been to Cobh..

Crosser = takeaway supper from "Chish & Fips" chip shop followed by a few bevvies in Cronins pub. Maybe you could drop a few coins in Pipers amusements...

Don't forget, while in Spain you probably won't get home-style fish n chips, so might as well splurge before you go!

I've seen campers to overnight in the main carpark in Crosshaven. I haven't noticed any "no motorhome parking" signs there...

No height barriers currently.

Anyone tried Curabinny Woods seems the closest overnight parking to Ringaskiddy from the app. Sailing to Santander in a few weeks and want to be as near as possible as we sail at 11am. Thanks.

Just park up in ringaskiddy. There's a few spots in and outside the village.

@Blag. Kevin any chance you could upload the photos from your earlier posts on this topic if possible.

@StrandCampingDoonbeg. Jami where did you eventually park?

I think more people are going to be heading in that direction and the complete info would help.

Was that by the Royal Cork Yacht Club?

I'd also recommend this quiet parking spot near Camden fort, up the hill on the other side of the village. Nice views of the harbour and a place for doggies to have a run. Note: The car park is on a bit of a slope.

I think it's on the parking app.

BTW - Fort Meagher is open for public tours, if any of you have interest in old army camps and coastal fortification, it'd be worth a visit.

When heading out on morning ferry in June we parked at N51.832729, W008.321506 I know it says 'taxi' but if you arrive the evening before when there is no ferry due and join the queue next morning before the ferry is docked there won't be any taxis using the space. All other parking areas have hight barriers 🙄☹
