Hi folks. We’ll be making our way to Dublin Port soon enough. I find the Dublin Docklands and port a bit of a maize. So I’ve checked AA Routeplanner for directions. It seems straightforward enough, coming from the 3 Arena hang a right on to Alexandra Rd. But a quick look at the junction on google street view and there is a sign showing the port straight on and a traffic alert saying ‘Dublin Port Keep Left’.

So does anybody know if I can take the right on to Alexandra or not?

There was a temorary closure of alexandra road on may 9th, maybe thats what you are seeing. As far as i can remember, you can turn right onto alexandra road, filter lane.

if you do a google map search from ringsend, which takes you down past the 3 arena on your left, it shows a right turn into alexandra road.

No problem with turning right at Alexander Road there's a filter lane there but the signage for both Irish ferries and Stena is better if you continue on to the top of the road and bear left and follow the signage for the port.

Here is what street view shows. This is the junction for Alexandra. A right turn takes you to the port but the signs tell you keep left keep left for the port.

I don’t want to end up taking the tunnel so I think I’ll go right. And judging by what you’re all saying that should be fine.

Thanks!

if you actually follow that sign to the port, it brings you off to the left, signs say m50 i think, and around to the right and it brings you right into the port.

But so does turning right at alexandra road, and it looks the clearer route.

The tunnel is only 3e most of the day except peak time and goes straight into port and would give you a non stop drive from Galway

I thought about the tunnel Dave. 3 euro is fine, but then I’m hit for the M50 Toll, having already hit two tolls coming cross country. We might take the M50 yet but it only takes 15 mins off.

If you don’t have a toll tag, Don’t forget to pay the Westlink toll on M50 in advance in newsagent etc ( if heading off on holidays) as it has to be paid before 8pm next night.
Coming from south Dublin after Alexandra Rd , The Port Tunnel is up and over going northbound but the road to ferry) ( after you pass the left turn to East Wall Rd) goes to left and curves around under Port Tunnel road. It is well signposted overhead and think on road too to allow you get into correct lane.

Just to be complicated if you cross the Liffey over Samuel Beckett bridge I don’t think you can turn right towards 3 Arena (Point Depot) ...better to come over East Link toll.

I was planning to come in the N4, on to Islandbridge and on to the Arena via the quays. We are sailing Saturday 4pm.

Ok. Don't turn down Alexander Rd when you get to the end you have to turn left and come to a stop, tee junction where you have to cross the outgoing traffic and get into the incoming .Follow the directions to the Port and then IF.
Personally I would not go near the Quays at lunch time on a Saturated or any other day if I can help it.
Take a look at the Dublin city council Traffic Cams No's 10 - 22 - 122 - 135 next Saturday between 12 and 2pm and see for yourself what the traffic is like .
Is it worth while getting to the check inn all hot and bothered for the sake of the price of a pint.
Take the M50 and Tunnel .
Its also worth while to check Google directions on Saturday for the time you hope to arrive at the M4/M50 junction and see what the travel time from there to the Port is for both routes.
Also as Rosemary said remember to pay the M50 toll if you use it there is a service station down in the docks st which you can pay or pay in advanced.
Let us know which way you end up goings.

I'm with Martin on this one. The North Quays are very restricted from Capel Street to But bridge and on a Saturday afternoon it is bound to be slow. Best bet is N4, M50 and the tunnel - how valuable is your time and minimum delay.

Well that settles it. I’ll take the tunnel. No point in risking delays.

Cheers all!

You can pay M 50 toll online before you leave the house I think up to 2 weeks in advance

Jason, small point if relevant, I think I remember you had a dog in Kilfenane at NY, if so is it going to France too?
Extra time will be needed to check in. Others with dogs may want to know procedure in Dublin Port

That’s right Rosemary. We’ll be taking little Olive to France. IF say check in 2 hours in advance if traveling with Pet. When all goes to plan we should be in a position to answer recent questions about traveling on the W.B. Yeats with a dog. She hasn’t sailed before. She’s well used to being left alone in Kennels and what not. But the swaying of a boat might be a new (freaky) experience for her.

Cheers.

Handiest way is to go to www.eflow.ie and create an account and select ‘video account’ and add your vehicle registration number (you don’t need a tag on video account, it reads your number plate) and add a bank card for payments. It accepts ‘foreign’ registrations !
M50 tolls automatically paid at a reduced rate too. Very handy, never need to remember to pay by 8pm that way.

It’s great. I’ve had it for years. Never an issue. Don’t have to pay for tags either. Not as cheap as with tags, but cheaper than the standard cost ideal for occasional use

Did I see somewhere the same Eflow account works on the tolls on the continent, is this the “foreign registration plates”.
What happens NI registered cars on the Westlink toll? If you haven’t paid?
Are there any toll roads in NI?

Just been on the eflow website. So if you sign up for a tag, it seems you can’t use the express lanes on national tolls as it’s only for cars and small vans. So it really only works for M50. Or you can sign up for the video ( license plate recognition) account. The latter looks like a good enough option as the tag has a monthly maintenance charge of €1.

Video account is better IMO unless you are a regular user.

No Rosemary, I was being ‘tongue in cheek’ with that remark. I was referring to NI/GB registrations being acceptable on the Irish eflow system. Sorry if I caused confusion.

The tag still lifts the barrier at all other tolls, indispensable for a left hand drive wagon.

Last two times I have use the MH on the M50 I have charged as a commercial van. Queried it both times and the payment was reduced. This time they say that they will take measures to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Just check your bill.

Carry on about the best route into Dublin port.
Tolls discussion spilt off to here, forum/topic.php?t=19492
