Van Conversion - All the legal stuff?

So, I'm hoping to convert a van during the summer and have my eye on a couple of Citroen Relays.

I know the 13% VRT might be a kicker at the end but hoping it won't be too much - From reading other threads I know its hard to tell exactly what it's going to cost.

But here is my question... if I tax the van in the first instance as a commercial van (I have my own business and would occasionally need a van) at what point does it have to be changed over to a campervan to be on the right side of the law. Can I drive a commercial van with a kitchen and bed in it!?

This is my first time posting so hope I'm in the correct category and thanks for your help in advance.

You would have to get the gas appliances certified, and having these items in the van how would that effect the insurance etc

See... what you mean. I guess the only above-board way to do it is to declare it off the road and sort to vrt / logbook once it's done...thanks

My van was converted from new in 2002 and used as an on site office and workshop on commercial insurance for 12year's
I did the transfer over to camper van in 2014 when I bought it

Interesting!
Anyone know what way horse box’s and motor sport race vans are insured, they also have living quarters with gas on board

That's interesting sprinter. I suppose I want to be on the right side of the law but don't mind being in a greyish area! Most construction vans have storage etc built-in and it's not uncommon to carry portable gas stoves for a site cuppa tae.

Probably the only actual concern is if insurance would use the modifications to refuse cover in the event of an accident.

I would like to register it as a camper but would like to use it while the conversion is going ahead.

I've never converted a van but using it during conversion sounds like having a new kitchen fitted and taking it for a drive during fitting 😁

To be honest I don't think what you have in the van is much of a concern to the insurers,a modern road crew van will have a sink and cooking facilities fitted,
The problems you may find is that under commercial insurance you are not covered for social domestic and pleasure, so it may not cover you to use it on days off,
And if the law stopped you on a Sunday you will have questions to answer.
