Depreciation

Due to a change in family circumstances the layout of our motor home isn't really suitable, so we went back to our dealer to see if there were other more suitable layouts. When we asked about trading in our unmarked 12 mth old for a new model, we were told our van had depreciated by over 30% , is the dealer having laugh , or is this normal 😠

That's 30000 off a 100000 van and 15000 off a 50000 van a bit much I would think

22,000 depreciation 😨 , the van is unmarked !!! Some waffle about V.A.T.
My last van was 8 years old when I bought it (from the same dealer) , it had only depreciated approx 40% from original cost new. I know inflation etc. would have an impact, but 30% in 1 year is outrageous, even when we were going to buy a new Van. I think I'll be keeping it.

look at selling it privately, get an idea off ebay/autotrader as to what the same model similar spec etc are going for.

A dealer will always have an excuse for giving so little on trade-in, I have heard the one about VAT etc, but shameful all the same that they cant offer more especially when looking to buy another.

If you are ROI reg, 13.5 % is vrt. A tax on your numberplate.
Vat is another added tax but I stand to be corrected on this one, I think that if you export a ROI mh, you can reclaim the VAT back.
Someone will probably clarify this.
Of course the dealer will deduct a few percentages for themselves.

Ask him what price he would sell it for and start negotiations from there

It's a dealer in the North, the van is great, just the layout is a bit of a problem, not worth changing, so I'll work something out. I was just shocked at the attitude. Thanks for the advice.

During year one depreciation is massive. I know of a 182 reg motorhome with a few hundred km's on the clock and only used a handful of nights which was sold for about 80% of the price paid. Not only was it unmarked but the delivery stickers were still on the windscreen.

After year one things get much better, My 05 motorhome is still worth 35 > 40% of what I paid for it.

I do know vehicles deprecate at a great rate in the first four years especially the first year, 30% sounds a bit excessive though but remember if you were buying a new Motorhome and was offered a one year old you would want to get a good discount to tempt you to purchase it. One guideline I got from a Motorhome Dealer was, a 10 year old Motorhome is valued at 50% of the original purchase price

Colin, This may not help but it got me thinking, the figure of 22k, it does give you something to work with as regards adjusting what you have to suit your new requirements,

I think at 30% the dealer is having a laugh.. you never see 1-year old MHs valued at list -20% (to allow for VAT). The best bet is to try to hold on to it for 2-3 years as new prices continue to increase and second hand values remain strong, depreciation is not as severe over a longer period.

Colin we recently wanted to change to a lower layout and it was depressing seeing the depreciation, so keeping it , but loved one we saw and keep thinking about it.
I wrote a longer version of our story, see my PM to you.
