We need to replace our leisure batteries as, fully charged they last for a grand total of 30 minutes. Where is the best place to buy them? Can they be delivered from abroad?

If possible post a photo of the label sticker on your battery.
This would give the size, amphere and other info on your battery.
Having this allows for better advice to be given.

I've just ordered two of these, the price is excellent and the specs., 400 cycles @ 75% DoD, 750 cycles @ 50%, 1600 cycles at 20% DoD, indicate they are genuine deep cycle units.

By contrast These from Halfords are of unknown quality as there is no reference to depth of discharge (DoD) accompanying the quoted number of recharge cycles, the best one (€194) only quotes 400 cycles of unknown DoD while the Monbat quotes 400 cycles @ 75% DoD which is running the battery down to 12v 400 times.

Good tech explanation HERE

Some buy from Halfords and others get by mail orderrrom the likes of Tayna.co.uk

Bought Leisure Battery from Halfords, Battery failed in under 1 year but they replaced it without the invoice and gave me a further 2 year warranty with the new Battery ,

Bought two Leisure Batteries from Leisure batteries direct last year postage was €10 each

Bought Two engine Batteries for, Pajero and small Kubota Tractor from Tayna.co.uk recently and the postage was €20 each but still much cheaper than buying locally. However Batteries on line might not be that cheap if one fails and you need to return it for warranty

Been using 2x 115ah halfords batteries for last 4 years and have been great, and they do get quite heavily used, but 160w solar through mppt controller on them constantly.
They have lost capacity, noticeable on our extended last trip....
but, I’m OK with that timeframe for renewal and I’d use the same again.

If you are an AXA/Dolmen customer just take in your windscreen disc/insurance policy/AXA plus card to Halfords and you'll get 10% off.

The two original 110 batteries in my van lasted about 10 years before they wouldn’t hold a charge and I suspect it was only one of them that went down bringing the other with it. I bought 2 new leisure ones from a motor factor and they only lasted a couple of years. I got the ones I have now from Europarts for about £120 each and they appear to be doing the job for the last 3 years. It is best to check reviews about the battery before you buy

Varta LFD batteries are the industry standard for leisure batteries, and are pretty much what every other battery is judged by performance wise. Bang for buck, even my battery supplier(I'm a mechanic) told me that they would be the best value in the long run.
With trade discount, I paid 125 each for 2 Varta LFD 90's in Ireland.
Cheap batteries will give cheap performance,so try to go for a proven brand/type.

Bit harsh! I asked for advice about leisure batteries for our mh and another member posted a link for a website where I could find decent batteries for mhs. I can't get the website to open and it seemed the next logical step, on a forum, to see if anyone else had a problem with it. Doesn't seem off topic to me to discuss a website that sells batteries for motorhomes.

Leisure Batteries are tricky.
Their lifespan is relative as to how someone uses their leisure battery.
All it takes is 15 or 20 complete flattening cycles to balls up the best battery on the market.
By the time that a battery hits 12 volts it is dead.
A recommendation must be taken in the context of its use.
Is there solar charge?
Do the owners usually use, hook up electricity ?
How low does the owner discharge their battery before its fully recharged?
I replaced 2 leisure batteries, 2 years ago from my local supplier, who promised that these batteries would power half of the parish. Last summer in France, we hit 40°c plus for nearly 2 weeks. The heat has certainly diminished our batteries because since then we have lost at least 25% of our capacity.
Personally, I believe that the heavier the battery the better.

We are total beginners so we have no previous usage to go on! We collected our mh just after Christmas and the batteries were as they are now then. To be honest we never even discussed it that they should last longer until the last couple of weeks. Each weekend we've gone out we've been on a hook up. There is a solar charge but no idea of any details. I'm tempted to drive to the nearest motorhome dealer to get a good understanding. The dealer we purchased off was too busy with an event when doing the handover unfortunately.

Now for the newbie questions... Is it better then to hook up regularly and avoid discharging the batteries too much and too often? It keeps them better?

Is a 'heavier' battery based on higher ah?

Keeping things simple.
A leisure battery is kind of similar to the battery that starts an engine. Both have metal plates inside which react to an acid in the engine battery case and a gel in a leisure battery case. This reaction is what produces the electricity. Obviously metal weights heavier than liquid or gel, hence why I reckon that the heavier the battery, the better.
Most mechanics and certainly places that sell batteries are able to test the quality of your batteries. It's the same testing for an engine battery as a leisure battery.
My advice would be hook the van up to mains and charge the leisure battery up, and go to someone and get your battery tested. Afterwards you can made a better decision.
It is worth pointing out that frosty weather reduces the chemical reaction inside of your battery and afterwards your are down voltage.

To add to Malcolm's .
Battery's fail more from non usage then usage.
If you think we start our car's every day maybe a few times,no problems.
But how many times have you heard of someone parking their car at the airport for two weeks and when they try to start it, problem.
Another thing, your Dealer needs a kick up the arse,if he was too busy with future sales, to complete the one he did with you.
He is the person who should be answering your questions .so arm yourself with all the answers from here, before you go back to him for possibility some remedies.

Some good advice there. But Malcolm, it’s not necessarily true that leisure batteries have gel instead of acid. That’s suggesting that all leisure batteries are Agm or similar which might confuse novices. A lot of leisure batteries are “wet” type

Just tying to keep things simple.
Generally leisure batteries are sealed, no gases being released into the house side of things.
Please by all means made your own recommendations for the "novice" folk.

Probably best to wait until you have details of your current battery. It is likely that your van will be set up for that battery and to change its type, ie Ah, wet acid, etc will mean changing the setting for the solar or charger. Ok if you know how, but easier to keep it simple and replace like for like. Let us know the battery details and take it from there.

While it wasn't a leisure battery I bought but an auxiliary one for the car, I bought it online from Tayna, ordered it on Friday night and it arrived yesterday. Quite a difference in paying roughly £40 against £300 which Landrover wanted for the same thing!!! Overall a good service from them.

I've been doing my research on a new leisure battery with a constraint of fitting under the passenger seat so a maximum height of 190mm. I'm trying to keep to a sub €200 budget including delivery if there's no bricks and mortar option. Shipping from the UK is either expensive or not available depending on the website so it's looking like a local purchase.

The Varta LFD90 and Bosch L3 013 appear to be a pair of badge engineered identical twins, both 90AH and NCC Class B. The Varta is available for €130 from marineparts.ie and I can collect in Dublin, so a strong contender. EuroCarparts have the Bosch priced at €155.60 with todays special discount code but delivery is not available and there's no stock for collection at any of their outlets AFAICS, they have a somewhat similar Lion Leisure 100AH for €120 available but zero technical detail makes me think it's sh*t and the Bosch is only listed to get the search hits in an attempt to bait and switch to the sh*t Lion alternative.

MarineParts.ie also have a 95AH NuMax with a 3 year warranty so slightly higher capacity than the twins above and a longer warranty at €145, also NCC Class B. NuMax is not a brand I'm familliar with but a little research tells me its a brand of a Korean battery maker that also makes Lucas and Hankook batteries, not sure if it's a simple case of badge engineering that differentiates them. Lack of detailed recommendations probably means I'd stick with the Varta over this.

Monbat have been recommended above, the only one I've seen that meets the size requirements is the Monbat XLM110LB leisure battery- Low Box coming in at €120 from cosycampers. It claims 100AH but an NCC Class C rating and a weight of just 16.6kg v's 23.7kg for the twins makes me think it's a little lightweight and without a big enough price advantage to tempt me away from the Varta.

Banner also seem to have a strong reputation there's a Banner 100AH NCC Class B option available for collection in Dublin for €180, they seem to be priced comparably with NuMax on UK sites but more expensive here, shipping would make it more expensive to order from tayna.co.uk than batteries direct. The slightly higher capacity could be good but not sure if it's worth the extra? I'll keep it on the list.

When reading some reviews on the Varta/Bosch I found the following blog, it may have been linked here previously too...

http://www.aandncaravanservices.co.uk/battery-technology.php

They evangelise about the Varta/Bosch but they also have tested the Yuasa L36-EFB and found it to be even better.

No Irish stockists seem to have the Yuasa, online anyway, Micksgarage carry Yuasa leisure batteries but they're all too tall for my needs, they look to be the older range. On tayna.co.uk the Yuasa L36-EFB comes in at about 20% more expensive than the Varta. Now here's the twist, I'm sure it's been mentioned on this site in places and I've definitely read it elsewhere, Halfords own brand are made by Yuasa. The Halfords HLB700 appears to have all of the same specs, size, weight, output, NCC class, etc... and comes in at €113.40 with the AXA discount, if it's identical to the Yuasa L36-FEB, that's a steal.

That got me thinking about a step up in the Halfords range the HLB-800, which specs wise reads the same as the Yuasa L36-AGM, both NCC Class A, size, weight, output etc... are identical. The Halfords one comes in at €156.60 with the Axa discount.

Is the AGM really worth the price differential v's the lesser spec'd Yuasa/Halfords or the Varta? As I understand it, the AGM can tolerate being discharged to a much lower rate without losing capacity. It seems however that both the Varta/Bosch and the Yuasa FEB have moved the game on significantly v's traditional wet batteries while AGM seems to have been significantly oversold in terms of its longevity in some quarters. Anyone have direct experience of moving from traditional wet lead acid to AGM or vice versa? Better still, anyone move from AGM to a Varta or Bosch? Was the AGM worth it?

I had 2xBosch AGMs I got 30 months out of them never again, Varta seems to be the ones to go for, but I decided to go with the Halfords class B ones out of convenience and a 2 year guarantee and I think they are the good yuasa ones but could easily be wrong on that

I had 2xBosch AGMs I got 30 months out of them never again, Varta seems to be the ones to go for, but I decided to go with the Halfords class B ones out of convenience and a 2 year guarantee and I think they are the good yuasa ones but could easily be wrong on that

How long have you had the Halfords Class B?

About 6 weeks, their new to Halfords so I took the gamble they may be the Yuasa efb ones but no way of knowing, I just wasn't going near AGMs again

Just checked now when I fitted my 2 halford batteries, class B, 110ah.. it was August 2014.
Get heavy use with us, they have lost some of the capacity but still well usable and won’t replace yet. I’ve 160w solar via MPPT controller, can’t remember if I've ever switched on the EHU on-board charger.
Pound for pound they’ve been good and can’t fault their service, almost 5 years and going good.
Will replace with same again when time comes.
