Travelling with a dog when its hot

 ·

We are considering getting a dog in the next year or so, as a lot of people on here seem to have them my question to you is how do you manage them in the van when it gets hot? I've looked through previous posts about dogs so have all the information on ferry logistics, pet passports and vets etc. but can't find any information anywhere on travelling with dogs in Europe when it gets hot. I have seen a few articles on US sites but as they all have air con so it kinda doesn't apply.

We have a Ducato van conversion and for the last three years we have headed to France for the month of July, due to my work this is the only time we can get away. We have two little ones, now 5 and 3, who we have to keep entertained so this can mean day trips to zoos where dogs would not be allowed. What do you do with a dog if you need to leave them in the van for a period of time if it is hot? Is it a case of you just can't do it or is it possible keep the van cool enough by leaving roof vents open and windows cracked along with plenty of water? We mostly stay in aires, we have a solar panel but obviously are trying to save juice where possible so fans are not really an option.

Any thoughts/advice you might have would be great.

We have 2 dogs and keep them cool ( and us ) with 2 very large Endless Breeze fans blowing non stop when its very hot. I dont know why you would rule fans out because we never run out of power from our leisure batteries and solar panels....They recharge pretty quickly in hot sunny weather. Endless Breeze fans move a huge amount of air with very little draw of current. Plenty of fresh cool water also as already mentioned.

You change your behaviors and activities to work around your new dog. A pain sometimes but hey, you are now a proud dog owner! 🐕

Sootyrex....I got mine brand new on ebay from the US. Even with shipping costs they worked out around 120eur each. Expensive enough I know but they are great fans that really do work well and draw very little power. A friend of mine took a lend of one and was instantly sold on them so he ordered online also for his camper. I did notice the is one UK supplier of these fans on ebay.

You can buy a gel mat for dogs to sit on which keeps cool in B and M stores in NI probably in pet stores in ROI

The gel mats need to be refrigerated before use do they Dave? Do they take up much space folded up?

Thanks for the replys, will definitely look at one of those fans, had always thought they'd draw to much from the battery. We only have the one leisure battery at the moment, will probably increase that to two but will hang on till the current battery needs to be replaced to do that.

We haven't got the dog yet just looking into it at the moment trying to see how practical it is. We tend to do a lot of outdoor activities so thought the dog would fit in well but we'll hang on till after this summers trip anyway before we decide anything.

We have seen lots of others with dogs when we've been away and we were always curious how they managed it as last year it was crazy hot at times while we were away, sometimes the van was 36-40 degrees inside when we got back to it after a day out. This was with roof vents and windows closed for security though.

Dogs can self regulate pretty good, so whatever you do to keep yourself at comfortable temperatures, it's good enough for them.

Dog will absolutely love campervan adventures and being with you guys all the time, that's all they really need and want, love and company. :)

If you've a bit of a freezer keep yoghurt pots and you can fill them with water and a bit of kibble and give them as little ice lollies to help cool them. Haven't dealt with Europe but generally for heat I'd have the blackouts drawn to reflect the sun and the skylight/roof vent open to let air through!

No , I can remember touring in a caravan with a 10 month old child , our pup is a lot less bother. Anyone who leaves a dog or creature of any kind in a vehicle in hot weather in any country, deserves a lot more than a stiff fine.

Who is more loyal? your dog or your wife?

Lock your dog in the boot of the car, then lock your wife in the boot of the car, when you let them out. whichever one is happiest to see you is more loyal.
