Silver Screens

OK might seem like a stupid question but...............

We've been away last few weekends and as its fairly cold in the evening have been using the heating which keeps us more than cosy. Problem is in the morning the front windscreen has half a gallon of condensation on it.

So question is does a Silver screen just help keep the heat in (not really a problem so wouldn't bother) or does it also stop that condensation issue ( which is the problem and worth the expense)

Thanks in advance

Mal

it stops the condensation as it insulates the warm interior of the glass against the cold exterior which promotes the buildup of condensation. They also work at keeping out the summer heat when you may need it to be a bit cooler inside.

I never (usually) leave home without them.

For proof positive have a look at this link on motorhomefacts.

https://forums.motorhomefacts….aging.html

Very informative and as has already been said also keeps the van cooler in summer. Ours almost entirely eliminates condensation.

His website looks interesting as a blog as well.

Worth noting that its the external screens that reduce the condensation

The internal ones will do nothing to reduce the condensation

External screens it is true to say you only get what you pay for. The cheapo screen do not work as well as the better ones.

Good thing for you, is that you have a Ducato. Prime brands to look for are Silver Screen and Taylormade and if possible get the longer versions that cover the airvents located on the bonnet. Usually a few used ones around for the same money as the thinner versions.

I prefer the shorter ones and just close the recirculating vent, I find they stay on better in storms, but everyone is different.

The problem with the external ones is what to do if it happens to rain... .

Give it a shake, I find them quite repellent.

I learnt a great trick from Stevie, keep a squeegy rubber window cleaner thingy on a shaft, and just before you put the screens away give them a quick scrape.

Our old silver screens were a thin material, so the screen could be loosely folded and set into a bucket until next night or return home. The current screen is bigger (A class) and has padded insulation as well, so we either roll it up and bag it until next night, or store it in the special compartment for screens in every van....... the shower room.

As Ally says they shed water quite well when shaken and it is no worse than storing wet coats from a rainy day walk.

I bought Silver Screens when they first came out and bought a set for each van I had ever since. They do what they say on the tin and are easily stowed. You can pick up a second hand set at a reasonable price as people are always changing vans.

I do a lot of wild camping, so I use the internal screens. Just in case there’s any tomfoolery, I want to be able to just drive away, not have to get out and remove the screen before I can drive away. I find them ok. Some condensation alright, but the little k-archer window vacuum sorts that in seconds

I do something similar. With the window kit take off the excess water with the rubber scraper then run over it with the soft pad.

I’m on the lookout for a set for a 2007 Ducati external ones if anyone is selling £40 on eBay but they don’t look like the thick padded ones

Just be careful of 2007 models, both the old and new Ducato’s were sold in 2007. You are probably talking about the 2007 and newer I presume.

I got a new set of Silverscreens last year. Very pleased with them. One difficulty I find is that, unlike the internal type, if it is raining, you may have to get out in the rain to put them on or take them off. Again if it is raining you have to dry them for storage. But quite pleased with them.

Same as that but its a small price to pay as the benefits are worth it in my opinion 👍🏻

Are they really that much better than internal screens?? My big issue with them is this... if for any other reason, things go pear shaped I can pull off my covers and drive. Ye would have to get out... into a potentially dangerous situation, remove your covers, get back in and off you go. I appreciate that is an unlikely scenario, but still. External covers would want to be the dogs #%~ before I would fit them. About 10 seconds with the karcher window vac solves any condensation on the windows

If I have any doubts about the spot that I'm parking I leave the screens off,
But as yet I have not felt that unsure of my parking spot.......touch wood

I did think of reaching out to you as Wicklow was an option, a town I really enjoyed quite a few years ago. But I do need to work next week, so, I said to myself, stay away. That’s my bad... not yours. Plus I want to stay friends with Mariella, (prob wrong spelling) I look forward to meeting you both again soon
